Anyone In The First Week Of Recovery? How's It Going?

Recommended Posts

I've been out of surgery for 48 hours now.

  • Minor gas pains.
  • TERRIBLE incision area pain.
  • Can hardly move w/o feeling as if I'm tearing open all over.
  • Insane muscle pain in entire abdomen and back.
  • Can only take about 2 oz of Fluid or it feels like it will all come back up and I think I'll DIE if I vomit. So I'm taking liquids slowly and probably not taking enough.
  • Pain meds bring some relief to the body, but upset the stomach.

How is everyone else doing?

UPDATE: Day 9: I'm pretty much back to normal, except for the port pain. It's about 75% better, but still easy to cause pain in that area. I still can't sleep on my side or do a single sit up without excruciating pain. Walking around, sitting, driving are all MUCH better in the port area than they were a few days ago. Also, my appetite is coming back (so much so that I dreamed I ate my shoe last night). Still hard to get things down my esophagus, but I find I'm hungry more often, Oh, and I'm craving Cheetos like you would not believe, but don't worry, I won't eat them.

I'm 6 days post op, feeling better each day :) I have some port pain, and a sore abdomen. Other than that, today I'm feeling great! It will get better each day and definitely be worth it in the end.

I'm now on day 4. The gas is about 70 percent resolved. It's the port that's killing me. I can hardly move. It does not show any signs of infection bot it is lumpy there. Feels like its burning and ripping when I move my core - which is pretty much every time I move.

What was your port like in the first few days? When did it get better?

Day 4 here - gas pain was the worst. Especially when it moved. Lower intestines back to diaphragm, up to shoulder, back down to diaphragm - I thought I was going to DIE!! Last night, it finally eased up a little and this morning I feel A LOT better.

No real incision pain unless I jerk or twist suddenly. They itch though...

I have to say, I was banded June 19th and I didn't really have bad gas pains....of course I walked like a maniac. Only took pain meds for 3 days and on Friday, went to the movies with my neice. I can feel where my port is, but it's not painful. My incisions are itchy.

My biggest problem is I am not getting all my Protein. I have tried and tried. I can't get through a shake, I add cottage cheese to all my Soups...but I get full before I get it all in. I will get it figured out, and I have some extra Protein Clear liquids left from the first 2 days, so I am sipping that throughout the day. I do miss chewing, but this too shall pass.

I have to make adjustments to my life if this is going to work, and that is just one of the things that must be adjusted. It's not a permanent thing. On day 15 I get to transition to soft foods (mushies). I'm so excited. I never, ever thought I'd be excited about tuna! LOL

I am back at work today (on light duty for 3 more weeks). Hang in there Mom....it will get better.

I was banded June 20th. Lucky not to have shoulder tip pain but have had a very bloated gassy tummy. Gas settling. Surgical pain still.

It gets better each day. Just gonna take it slowly. It's definitely something that you have to asjust to. You have to listen to what your body is telling you. Enjoying free fluids and have plenty stocked up in the fridge. I'm going to go out for dinner this week so I'll order a Soup (liquified) and eat 6 spoons of it and that'll be it! Easy.

It's amazing what a different experience we are all having.

I'm POD #3 and feel great with the exception of left neck/shoulder pain due to my hiatal hernia repair. My incisions itch but that is due to healing. they look great. If it wasn't for the neck pain, I'd have manageable abdominal pain.

I've been on full liquids since POD# 1 because the pain meds were causing me to dry heave. My physician gave me permission to advance earlier if I tolerated it in order for me to keep the pain meds down.

Greek yogurt has been my primary Protein source. I'm not really hungry but I have to eat it not only for healing, but to keep the oxycodone down.

I haven't had any gas pains at all.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
