This No Drinks During And 30 Minute B4 & After Meal Rule Is Harder Than I Thought

Recommended Posts

I don't always obey the 30 mins before rule. I don't drink during or immediately after meals because that results in puking. While a free calorie dinner is nice in theory, I'd rather just follow the rules the best I can and avoid a slip.

I've never understood the 30 before eating rule. My doctor doesn't make us do that. If liquid goes right through the band what is the big deal? Asking because I don't know a real good answer.

My surgeon says to stop 5 minutes before.

B52 you are so correct. I love to drink Water and gulping it is a pleasure for me especially when it is cold and im hot. Oh how my wonderful restriction has given me issues all weekend. I have concluded I can no longer drink water after I eat. I have been pb'ing all weekend from drinking water after meals. After 1 time yesterday and 2 times today. That's definitely the issue. I am so excited. I think I am finally in the "green zone".

I haven't had my surgery yet, but the nutritionist told me I could not drink during my meal because it would wash the food through the band and it would take longer to feel full. In that case I would eat more. The same goes with waiting for 30 minutes after the meal.

I have heard that, depending what you drink, it can "prime" the band and make it looser. Myself, I don't worry about drinking before. I don't have a drink near me when I'm eating, and I wait (try to) 30 minutes....it's hard, I know!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
