Ladies - thanks for the input. I will be having surgery on Tuesday and going back to work the next Monday. I so totally hope the combo of a hiatal hernia and lap band isn't more than I can handle...in terms of pain. The gas comments is the part that scares me. Do the Gas X strips work?

I am having lapband and hiatal hernia repair the day before you. My surgeon said the pain would be a little worse, most likely, but to make sure you use your pain medicine as soon as the pain starts coming back the first several days. If you wait until it really hurts, it will be hard for the medicine to catch up.

To aemh...Wishing you the best of luck with the process..I am so upset right now..I just received the denial from my insurance company stating that even though my BMI is 39.5, I don't have any other co-morbidities to approve the surgery..I am going to appeal this because I have a strong family history of diabetes and heart disease, even though I don't have it yet, I am on the road to getting it! wouldn't they rather me avoid it now?? anyone have any suggestions on appealing this? thanks..Karen

I don't have any suggestions for appeal, but I also was denied by insurance. We took our tax return and just paid it. My husband and I talked alot about this and decided that this is a life investment. To be here for my husband and children is worth all the money in the world.

Another update for those interested - I had an uneventful night, the nurses checked on me and roomie (who also got the lap band) several times and gave us anti nausea and anti inflammatory medicines (all through the IV) This morning we were taken off the IV (and pain meds...eeek) around 7am. We then went down to x-ray to to the barium swallow, which wasn't too bad he only made us take 2 sips (and it was very cold so didn't taste too bad) Our surgeon Dr Adam Glasgow came to our room, explained everything went fine, our x-rays showed everything looked great and was flowing through the band with no problem. He also put us both on stage 3 (full liquids) when we get home because he did not fill our bands at all. I have an apt in two weeks to get my staples out (yes staples!) My husband picked me up at the hospital at 10am, I am finally home! Right now the incisions/staples are a little sore so I just took my prescribed medicine from the Dr (a liquid medicine called roxicet) and have a heating pad on my tummy, so far still no gas pains (woo hoo...knock on wood) and am currently drinking a no sugar added carnation instant Breakfast to try and get some much needed Protein. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I'm an open book! :)

3 days post-op and doing great. Aside from being sleepy as all get out. Still not having the infamous gas pains but I am passing gas. Getting up and walking and drinking lots of hot tea, taking gas x, and anti nausea medications. I have only felt nauseated once but since the doc advised no vomitting I just take it to be on the safe side. Guess being a nurse at this point helps out a lot. I am nursing myself back to health slowly. My husband has been wonderful and he went back to work today, so I have to pick the kids up from daycare. I think I will have someone drive me not up for driving at all. So far all is well in bandland... :)

6 days now till my surgery. The Lord knew when to get me in gear for this procedure as I am having hietal hernia repaired also. The pain from the hernia is almost unbearable. I take protonix for it but I have breakthru pain constantly.

Just wanted to update everyone and thank you all for the "good lucks". Had the procedure this morning about 8. Feeling OK. Back is sore and shoulders are hurting but nothing too unbearable. I know tomorrow is going to be worse. Going to take it easy for the rest of today. I also had a hiatal hernia that was repaired as well so I am expecting even more pain. Good luck to those that had there procedure today as well and to those that have it coming later this week,

Glad it went okay for you! I didn't see you there though! I had mine about 7:00and was home by 9. Gas pains sucked for a bit but much better now. The night before surgery we got an "explanation of benefits" email saying we owe 17,500 for the endoscopy I had! The surgery center said there's no way that it correct, and they haven't heard from the insurance at all. And the insurance couldn't really give me any info. And then to add to it, my mom got in a wreck driving home from my house and broke her arm in 3 places! :(. We could really use some prayers for the insurance thing and for my momma please!

Ladybug28 & Dees and everyone else. Made it to my pre op meeting and it went pretty well! Meet the Dr and really liked Him! I loved Dr Fox as well but did not get him. Anyways.... So in our group meeting which I had no clue we were doing we talked about a lot of the thing we talk about in here. The advocate let everyone one know that beer was in the past (unless flat) which I think shocked one guy and I think for a sec he was thinking of backing out and the advocate said ( Well do you need the lapband more or AA!) LOL! which of course she was playing! So we got past that then she let everyone know about no sex for a week. Which was no big deal not sure the hubby will think that but it happens! Right!!! ;) Then she told us a funny story! About an older lady who asked if she could have a dr's note or 6 months!!!! Yikes! Dr assured me everything will be fine and I was in good hand! Have to be there in the morning at 7 I'm the first patient so that's great!

Wait I saved the best for last!!!!!!! The advocate let us all know she had a surprise for us and we were all quite and was thinking oh no what now?!? Tonight y'all may go out and eat whatever it is you like that you know you can't eat after tomorrow! So!!!!!! I'm on my way to PAPPADEAUX! Crawfish here I come!

~Steph

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
