I just found out yesterday that my insurance (Cigna) approved me for surgery. I was very excited until this morning when I remembered that I have a deductible that I have not yet met for this year. Do any of you know from experience how this is handled. Will I be required to pay that up front before I can have the surgery?

I work in the healtcare industry in regards to events like this. Every healthcare facility is different, but in our case (a larger facility) there are many different options. It depends on how high your deductable is as well. If you have for example a $10,000 deductable and cannot bring in the money then the surgery may be rescheduled. I work in Patient Accounts for a hospital, most of your deductible will be applied to the physicians bill since they typically get their claim in to the insurance first. If your deductible is under $1,000, the hospital may not ask for it up front, but to be safe, call the hospital and ask what their policy is.
