Weight Loss Normal Or Not?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on October 7, 2011 and I was 250 lbs, I have had two fills and currently have around 5 ccs in my band. I dont feel any restriction but I have been eating healthy (no fried foods, sugary, high calorie, I eat whole grains/wheats and I barely eat red meats) and I do workout occasionally. I am currently 217 lbs and I feel like I have not lost enough (although no one is typical), I feel like I should have lost more weight by now or am I just having a bit to high expectations for myself. I am going in for a fill this coming weekend. I feel even more discouraged because I went to a urologist ( I know they shouldnt know too much about banding procedures) and he told me that I should have lost more weight and its January 12th, 2012. From my understand people who get a gastric banding (I have the lapband) you don't lose weight as quick as people who get other gastic weight loss surgeries.

Am I overthinking this? I know everyone is different, I just want some imput from fellow banders.

Thanks!

I think you're doing great and that urologist is an idiot! Keep it up!

Sounds great to me! If you break down the numbers, you have only been banded for 3 months. You have lost a total of 33lbs thus far! The estimated weight loss with this surgery varies person to person but on average a healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs a week or at best 8-10 lbs a month. You have exceeded that, so keep up the good work. I am only 3 weeks in. I lost lost 21lbs but most of that was presurgery Optifast diet they put me on. I have lost about 10lbs since the surgery and have been stuck ever since. I have "0" restriction right now, and I am scheduled for my first fill next friday. I cannot wait!

I too have lost 10lbs from my surgery date & not a lb in the last week. Slow & steady coming off since it probably went on the same way. (at least with me it did). Keep up the good job!

I think you are doing great. 33 lbs in 3 months is fantastic. I was banded July 25th and just lost about 43 lbs. so far and I'm really pleased with these results. I could have never done this w/o the band even in 6 months. CAT

It sounds like you are right on track to me. If you don't mind me asking, why did you go to a urologist? The reason I ask is because if you are having the same problem I had, the massive weightloss cured my problem of stress incontinence.

Hi,

I went to the urologist because I have been having continuous UTI's since November and then recently have been testing negative for infections but still have the symptoms. But the urologist I went to was not helpful at all, I told him that a particular antibiotic was giving me adverse side effects and he prescribed it to me with a different name and didnt know until I got home and realized he had given me the same prescription just brand name (more money for him..i guess). He did not exam me or anything or even introduce himself. He seemed more concerned with my lap band lack of weight loss instead of my urinary issues. I guess he never struggled with weight at all, so telling a larger girl who has been large since 8 or 9 that she is not losing enough kind of put a damper on my motivation.

Thanks for all the support guys, I feel better reading and knowing from other people who have a band as well.

:)

You will find that everywhere. Remember that YOU know more about the band than all these other people you will encounter. Rely on your own lapband doc and staff. (and LBT is helpful as well)

Several months into my journey I went to a GNC store looking for some Protein powder. I told the guy what I was looking for and why (lapband). He was very much a weight lifter and went on and on ..."oh, I can tell you how to lose weight, you need to eat this and do that ......." wrong ....I'm already banded dude, just show me where the zero carb/high protein/low cal powder is.

I wish I could report your results. I was banded 10/10/11 and from surgery date to today, I have only lost 18 pounds. I really struggled over xmas break. I wish I was further ahead than what I am, but I know it will come. I just have to get back on track. I have had 2 fills so far and have 2.5cc's in a 10cc band. I don't feel restriction, but I do get stuck sometimes and that diminishes my want for food. I hate getting stuck. I go for another fill Monday, I'm hoping to start losing 8-10 lbs a month. Since surgery, I've lost about 5-6 a month. I would be thrilled with your weight loss and you should be too!! Keep up the great work and ignore people who don't understand the process.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
