I had my pre-op appointment yesterday with my doctor. When I asked him if I need to be on a pre-op diet he said no that he does not require one but everything I read online your supposed to go on one. Worried that there might be complications with my liver being too large. Anyone else have a doctor that didnt require them to go on a diet before surgery?

I think every docotor has a different protocol. My doctor is extremely strict in the pre-op diet but less so after the surgery. I don't think it would hurt to do the diet beforehand if you are concerned---I do Adkins shakes in the morning and afternoon and then a small high Protein meal for dinner. Not easy but if it shrinks my liver and he doesn't have to blow me up with as much air, I will be gratefull lol. I hear the gas is the hardest to deal with. I wonder if I should purchase stock in Gas-X chewables biggrin.png

My doctor did not require a pre-op diet either. Thank goodness cause I tried on my own but couldn't hold to it long. Atleast I had my good last big meals right up to the night before surgery and all went well.

Today I am 5 days post-op. I slept so good last night on my port side, with no pain. I am a side and stomach sleeper, so it was wonderful. I have lost my surgery weight, and am down 15 lbs all together, 219. My husband goes out of town today until Sunday, so I will have to take full parental duties on again today. I wish you all luck, love, and happiness!!

Judych, the airports were rough, especially Pheonix it is sooo big, and tons of walking. But, we manged, my husbands ankle was swollen and bruised after the trip, but I don't feel that sorry for him since I pulled the luggage around. I only took 2 little carry-ons. Good luck to you!! I did go to Mexico because I don't have insurance at the current time, and after researching I felt very positive about Dr. Ortiz and his staff. They are great, and have done over 10,000 surgeries so I knew I was in good hands. Plus we thought Tijuana was beautiful! We met alot of really neat people from all over the U.S, and Canada that were having surgery. And it was warm, it is so cold here in Idaho. BRRRR!!!

Yes I have already bought some Gas-X lol. I have started the Protein Shakes and I think I am just going to cut back a lot. Thank you for the reply.

Hi jenn0207, I just had my surgery yesterday and had no pre-op diet. My doctor doesn't require one unless you have a bmi of 50 or higher which I didn't. I didn't worry about it and ate what I wanted until my surgery. I had my last pre-op apt last fri and told him I had just been eating what I wanted and he said that was fine. I would trust your doctor on this one.

I'm back... LOL... Surgery was on Feb 16th so I am 5 days post op. Wow what a journey this has been. I had to stay in the hospital overnight due to insurance requirements. Glad I did because I had a reaction to the anesthesia (first time ever) & pain meds and got very sick. Gas pain in the lower back was terrible. I also developed a cough after surgery and coughing just hurt really bad. Once I got home things started coming into play a lot of better. Everyday since surgery has been a better day for me. I would do this over again and again. I feel great today except a little pain in the port area but that will go away with time. I am following doctors orders strictly and see nothing but great success a head of me.

Good luck to all the other Feb bandsters coming up. I hope your journey is a great experience!!!

Hi Jenn -

There's another woman getting surgery the same day as me, and he Dr did not make her go on a pre-op diet either... I think it just depends on surgical protocol... also, what about patients that go out of country? I always wondered if they had to go on pre op diet before flying to Mexico....

Good luck to you on your journey!

..it was a big thing to fly out that far. im so glad that you were able to appreciate the scenery and the nice weather though. Its really good to hear that you are coming along so well. i dont know if i would be able to manage it like you did... hopefully i wont have to consider flying anywhere to have it done. I havent even seen my specialist yet and im really nervous about it already. i know that he will go ahead with it, my joints are a major issue right now. plus my window of opportunity is slipping away to have it done as im going on 66. im looking forward to hearing more and more about how you are. do you keep a blog? what about private email even?? im drawing a lot of support from you and the others here. im going to need all the support i can get im thinking. my family dont know im having it done, only my husband.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
