Help! Is there hope after esophageal dilation?

Recommended Posts

I had my band placed over 6 years ago. I lost about 80 pounds in the first 18 months. I was thrilled! I thought that I was finished having kids, but had a "surprise" pregnancy 2 yrs later. I was so afraid that I would gain the weight back that I never even told my surgeon that I was pregnant or had my band loosened during my whole pregnancy. I remember sitting down to frequent small but nutritious meals and forcing myself to relax and keep the food down that my growing baby needed. I succeeded in having a very healthy baby and maintaining my weight. (Looking back on this it's obvious to me how idiotic this approach was, but I was operating out of fear and hormones.)

After the baby I gained 10 lbs. and went back to my Dr. for another fill to get back on track. After the fill, I sipped my little cup of Water at the office and was on my way. Long story short, my fill was waaaay too tight. I began having horrible coughing fits that kept me up at night, but had no idea this was a common sign of an over fill. I felt like crap and slimed often, but just blamed myself for eating too much or not chewing well enough. Eventually, I went back 6 months later (too long I know) and the doc watched me drink while under xray. He seemed a little freaked out. He immediately loosened my band and told me I had esophageal dilation. He didn't even explain what it was. Online research said that it is a nasty complication where the "rigid" esophagus is stretched to basically become part of your pouch. It's not reversible.

It's been 9 months since that appt. I've gained back 30 lbs with my low level of restriction. I feel like crap physically and am getting depressed. I NEVER THOUGHT THAT I WOULD SEE 200 POUNDS AGAIN IN MY LIFE. i now weigh 216. I'm so ashamed that I'm avoiding friends and family.

Today, I'm trying to work up the courage to see my surgeon. I'm even ashamed to see him. I don't know if he can even help me anymore. I hate the way I feel now. It's even worse because I know how much better it felt to be thinner. I have to do something.

HAS ANYONE OUT THERE HAD SUCCESS AFTER ESOPHAGEAL DILATION?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
