How long should I expect to be off??

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. My surgery is scheduled for Monday, Aug 22nd. I have only taken three days off of work (although I can certainly take more if need be). Is it realistic for me to return to work on Thursday or is that pushing it? My doctor has not told me how long I will/should be off.

my doctor told me to take off for 1 week. yes i was feeling good after a few days, but took the full 7 days as i am on my feet at my job and walk all over the place and did not want to over do it.

I am an Office Manager so I do not have to be on my feet and I have no heavy lifting. I guess it's best to just see how my body feels and not rush things. Thank you for your reply!!

Its probably best to take more than you think you will need and return early if you feel up to it!

I work in an office and don't have to do any heavy lifting. I had my surgery on a Thursday and went back to work on Monday. I felt good, but got tired by around 4-5pm and went home a little early a couple of days.

Good Luck!! :)

I had surgery on Wed and they also found a hernia in my stomach.

Went to work that Monday... a little sore for about a week but it was not bad at all..

Good luck..

I had surgery Aug. 11 and my first day back at work was Aug. 15th. I do have a desk job so I'm not required to be on my feet all day. I also had hernia repaired. I wasn't even taking pain medication anymore after day 2 of my surgery. But everyone is differant. Sunday following my surgery was my first day out of the house, so we did a little shopping went to get something to eat or for me I should say drink. And then I drove home from the store just so I could see how it was going to be the following day on my first day back to work. Everything went smooth and here I am 2nd day back at work and feel great. To me the more walking and moving around I did, the more the gas and soreness wore off. I say you know your body and its limits and if you have a job that requires alot of walking and being on your feet all day then I would take off more time and go back early if you feel like it. B)

I didn't feel "normal" until day 7... But again, everyone is different.

I would sugest taking a full week. I had surgery on a Monday and went back on Friday. After a few hours at work, I was wishing I had taken that day off. I sit at a desk all day as well. It was pretty uncomfortable for me to sit in my chair. It feels kind of like everything is being crunched together. By the following Monday, I was feeling much better :)

Thank you all for your responses. I had a c-section before so I know it is extremely important to walk and move to heal quickly. I think I will take off until Thursday and if I'm feeling OK I will come to work Friday. I can always leave early if I am in pain.

I was able to work at home (flexiplace), so I didn't go back to work for a week. I was banded back on 7/28, and I do think the easier you are on yourself that first week, the happier you'll be later. Keep in mind, this first month is really all about healing. Be good to yourself, don't lift anything heavy, plan on doing a fair amount of walking (helps with gas issues). Best wishes :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
