6 Months Since Lap Band Surgery...

Recommended Posts

Quick introduction: Hi, it's me!

Slightly slower introduction: Hi there! I started my LAP-BAND journey officially on June 30, 2010, with the first of 4 required visits with a nutritionist (per my then-insurance company). I don't count the seminar or the initial consultation with the surgeon's office prior to that. At that time I weighed 345 pounds. Between that time and the night before my surgery I (unofficially) lost 48 pounds. Since my surgery I've lost only 12 pounds.

I know where my problems were: lack of exercise and not closely watching my caloric intake. Around my 6-month anniversary of having my surgery I decided to take more aggressive control. I'm now exercising 4 days a week (2+ miles on a treadmill each day). I would do more but I have degenerative disc disease in my lower lumbar and have to try hard not to aggravate it or else it will put me out of commission for a while.

I also signed up on another site to track caloric intake, but here's my issue:

Prior to surgery I was given some "plans" for 1000-, 1200-, and 1500-calorie diets. They suggest numbers of servings for, for example, meats, dairy, vegetables, etc. But there are no "hard" numbers for Protein, carbohydrates, and fats, and the site I'm on gives hard-number recommendations for an 1820 calorie diet (I suppose based on my age and weight and physical activity) and I can adjust them if desired.

My question is: Do you have any "hard" numbers that were given to you for a specific-amount-of-calories diet for Protein, carbs, and fats?

My insurance changed since surgery (a touchy subject, one I'd rather not get into right now) and everything I do now is out-of pocket. So before I go see the nutritionist again, any complimentary advice would be most welcome!

Look into Spark People website for tracking. It breaks down how many calories you need and breaks down into carbs, fats, proteins...etc

my nutritionist told me to aim for 100-150 grams of Protein a day. I'm a male, 6'5" with a goal weight of 220. As for carbs/fats, I'd say follow the rules of banding... eat protein first, then vegetable, then carbs if there's still room.

hope that helps!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
