March 2011 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

I'm so glad that I didn't have to do a pre-op diet, I'm on day 3 of my liquid diet and am already tired of it. I'm trying to have some variety but my stomach is growling. I made a broccoli and cheese Soup today, bought a package of the frozen steamer pack broccoli and threw it in the blender with 2 pieces of cheese and a little milk, used the soup setting so it was well blended, tasted really good at first but I got tired of it quick.

I was banded yesterday!! I checked in at 7:30 AM and surgery was at 9 AM. A little sore but no real pain or discomfort. The anesthesia made me a little woosey but, they gave me meds for that! It's 5 in the morning now, and I am getting ready to be discharged! Good luck everyone! It was easy as pie!

Hi I'm cece in NJ and I am being banded this morning. I'm waiting for my daughter to come get me and reading the forums. I'm hoping all goes smoothly. When I first woke up I felt nauseous but I'm better now. It was probably just nerves. I am very nervous about this whole thing. Will post again soon.

I am home now!!! I went in this morning at 7:30 for a 9:30 surgery. When I arrived I was taken for the lovely pregnancy test which of course was negative. The nurse had stated that it indeed happens that people find out that they are pregnant. I thought to myself that would suck after coming this fall. (Not to say that I wouldnt ever love a baby). At that point I was given a gown and my weight took. Next I had to have blood drawn because my lab work showed that I had low potasssium. All that standard tests like temp and blood pressure were taken. I was given my iv in my hand and the lady was fantastic because it barely hurt. Lastly I was given the shot in my tummy to prevent blood clots. (I was really scared of this because I had heard that it hurt or burned but truely it ended up being NOTHING to worry about. ) Then hubby came in and we talked for a little while as people came in and out of the room. When the anastesiologist came in I told him how I was scared to throw up afterward and it had happened in previous minor surgeries. He gave me a patch for befind my ear that would help with sickness. My doctor came in then and asked a few questions and answered a few of mine. He was really pleased that I had lost 15.5 preop and I told him that I knew what the scale said but I didnt see it. He told me that he was sure that I had lost some weight in my liver and he would indeed see the loose and not to worry. Next thing I knew I was giving my husband kisses and started to get nervous. The ride to the or was quick and I was given something to calm me. I dont think I was in that room for 5 seconds and I was out like a light. When I work up I was in recovery with someone talking to me or around me becuase there were other patients in the room. I forced myself to open my eyes a few times and tried to wake up. I probably took 20 min to keep my eyes open for any length of time. At about an hour they helped me get up and walk 20 steps to the barium swollow test. I felt a little wozzy kind of like I the feeling that I had taken Nyquil two hours ago. I only had to do one drink and they watched and it was over. When I came back my bed was gone and they had me sitting in a chair. I had an ice pack on my stomach and it felt good. They continued to ask if I had pain and I said no. My throat felt so much better when I had ice chips. They tasted like the best ice chips ever. Then I asked to go to the bathroom and they helped me in that direction and I asked for my clothes. They took out the IV and got me clothes. When i came out of the bathroom I was a little light headed and sat down for about 5 minutes at that point my wheelchair was there to take me to my car. I know all this sounds fast but they gauged the time in recovery based on my wants. Others who were there before me were several steps behind me because that it what they needed. The ride home sucked to be honest. Bumpy roads and traffice but I made it. I got home about 1 pm and hubby gave me my pain meds in which I slept in my own bed for about an hour and a half. Now I am couching it. I am sore a little my throat is picky a little but on a pain scale I am a two and that it really from some gas pains. When they get paid I walk for 10 minutes or so and then they seem to pass. Well that it is for now. Lots of love to you guys and this was a cake walk people dont worry.

I am 5 days out from surgery and I feel great. Have been taking it easy on the chores due to being told not to do any bending. The Protein shakes that I use are from Jay Robb. They are somewhat pricey but taste better than a lot of others. You can find Jay Robb's at the Vitamin Shoppe. I take a chewable Vitamin that I got at Target. Best of success to you.

Cheers :tea:[

doodlebugsmom i'm so happy for you! See not so bad :-) just keep walking!! Walk every hour or two it will help with the NO2 gas that tries to settle in your shoulders. I kept that little patch behind my ear the full 72 hours just in case i was feeling "false" good lol

I have a question... I am on my pre-op diet day 4 and I have had a weird feeling in my tummy. It's not a horrible pain or feeling but if I had to guess it feel like what I think it would feel like if I had the band already! In other words its just like a tighting feeling around the top of my stomach or a pushing pain like something is pushing on my stomach. Its not a gas pain either. Does any one have any idea what might be causing it or has anyone else experienced this while on their pre-op diet.

Thanks

Amy

Amy...hunger? Or maybe your stomach has acclimated and actually shrunk (or is that a myth?)

Congrats to those banded today!

Today's been a bit easier (day 4 of preop diet)...but having the raw veggies w/ rice vingar has helped so much. Also the past 2 nights i've eaten real food (but light & within calorie restriction) for dinner...and opted for high Protein options (tuna last night and halibut tonight). I have to really try to not think about what i really WANT to eat! If I do it makes me wish i could have one last binge meal -- am i the only one?

anyway i heard today: my surgery is still on for Tuesday. I have to check in at 6am, with surgery scheduled for 7am. My husband will go to work, my MIL will help with the kids, and my mom will drrop me off then come back to pick me up. I've had so many surgeries I dont feel like I really need anyone there. I'm getting so excited, and so glad I only have 3 more days of the preop diet...and even though I know I'll have 2 weeks of liquids/softs, I'm so anxious to get on with the REAL long term food plan!

Marcyloo- Its not hunger... but I did notice today when I had my real food meal that I couldn't eat near as much as I could a couple of days ago so maybe it is that my tummy has shrunk but its just just a weird feeling...

As far as your comment about wanting that one last binge meal... I am right there with you!! I would love to have a little bit of everything right now! Good luck!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
