1 Week after surgery effects

Recommended Posts

Hello - my name is Amy and I got my lap band this past Monday at A.I. Dupont Hospital in DE. I am 17 years old and am actually a part of a study where only three hospitals in the country are participating in. It's a Gastric Lap Banding Sutdy that involves 14-17 year olds, and whether or not the band is effective for such a young age group. I am 5'8 and my heaviest weight ever was 283. However, my weight going into surgery was 270. I lost nearly 13 pounds on the the two week prior to surgery diet.

Anyway -- I had my surgery on Monday and was released to go home Tuesday afternoon (as protocall for this study, all patients have to spend the night)

My roommate, who was also a 17 year old girl and had her band put in just hours before mine was let go Tuesday morning, unlike me who was more towards the evening. The reason I could not go home as early as she did was because I actually threw up during the night post-op. I was given some crystal light and puked twice. The first time - dry heaved. The 2nd - a little bit of crystal light. My first question: Is this normal? Did anyone else throw up while in the hospital? I have my sister and my mom mostly supporting me. Both of them received the Gastric By-Pass surgery over 5 years ago and were very successful. My sisters best friend Donny had the lap band and he had said that he threw up as well. But I just wanted to ask if anyone of you perhaps threw up or if it was normal to do so. I am home now..and havent thrown up yet! :) Nor have I felt nautious(knock on wood).

I am still on a clear liquid diet and am still semi-sore. The tenderness inside me has gone down; my throat is still sore and I'm still very gassy. Normal?

OH::: One more question...along with my lap band being put in..My surgeon also repaired my hernea or something like that..he does it for all his patients. Anyone ever heard of this? To go along with that, when I take a drink of a cold beverage, (crystal light) I can feel it go down, and right before it enters the band, I get a sense of slight pain, and can feel the coldness of the liquid inside me...is this normal tooo? The pain is light and is a split second. I was thinking it perhaps is that tender hernea or the swollen area around the band.

Please , any information or answers to any of these questions, let me know! This is a great site..this is exactly what I needed! Were all in this together!

I guess I should add that I have lost around 5 lbs. in the last four days, but a healthy strong recovery is my initial goal for right now.

Thanks again everyone!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
