~~Hello~~ I'm new here and love it!

Hello everyone! I have been around for a short time and have even responded here and there but I wanted to formally introduce myself. My name is Tanya. I am 38 and weigh (gulp) 280 pounds. I live in California, about 1 1/2 hour drive from San Diego. I am married to a great guy (just celebrated 8 yrs) and I have a 14 year old son. I have always been heavy but in the past year there have been some rather difficult times in my life and I gained about 30 more. I have prayed that God would help me somehow and I do believe my prayers have been answered. I had my first doctor appointment to discuss with my dr the Lap Band surgery. It was awesome. After being on this site and learning so much and seeing videos on You tube I was able to walk in there and tell her what I wanted and know what I was getting into. So they are contacting my insurance to double check if it is covered (I mentioned that I called already and asked and they said yes, if deemed medically necessary). So the nurse told me to wait 10 days and call them back. That will be next friday. I am excited to get the process going.....hopefully all the documents are good and there are no problems with the insurance.

I am so glad to have found this site and am so grateful for you all.

Tanya

Welcome!!

We sound like we have things in common. I have been married 6 years and I have a 15 year old. I also have a 5 year old. I am 35 and at my heaviest (right before surgery) I was 285. Not good when you are 5'3"!!! I don't live in California, but I did many years ago. Does that count?? hehe

I also prayed a lot about surgery and did a lot of research. One day my mind "clicked" and I decided to get lap band. I just had my surgery 10/12/10, and I am very happy. This was the best decison I ever made. Do not be discouraged by any requirements your insurance may have. Mine seemed like a never ending list, but surgery came before I knew it.

I am very happy with my outcome and I hope you find the same happiness. Please keep us posted or feel free to add me as I friend. I am very new at this, but I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Good luck!!!!

Hi Tanya,

Congratulations on your decision. I'm sure you won't regret it. I just found this site myself and am scheduled to have my surgery on Wednesday (the 19th). I'm a little nervous - it IS surgery after all- but excited too. How much weight do you want to lose? Welcome.

Welcome to the site everyone! This can be a great resource and support tool. I started out at over 280 pounds (I'm also only 5'2) and am now down to 196. I felt pretty hopeless about my weight but now I know there is no doubt I can lose this weight! My suggestion would be to start taking care of your relationship with food (especially if you are a binge eater) before you get your band. I didn't really do that and did great initially with my band but then regained almost 50 pounds bingeing on slider foods (foods that go right through...like ice cream and milkshakes). Ive since lost all that I regained plus more and am seeing an eating disorder therapist which is really helping me work through my food issues. Good luck to everyone considering wls!

Hello My Name is shannon I am 24 years old and i live in ellenville new york.

The reason why i am replying to your message is because i saw what you had wrote about you going for the lap band surgery. I am also going for the lap band surgery as well I started this whole journey since september 8th of 2010 and it is now jan 16th 2011 and I am still waiting to go for surgery. I got all of my doctors done and now i am going next week to set up the date for my surgery. My mother is also going for the lap band surgery as well so we are going to be doing this journey together.

I am also going through a hard time like you have been going through i have been over weight my whole life as a teen and as a child at one point when i was 15 years of age i did get down to 110 pounds i finally got to wear a size 3 jeans and everything was going so well in my life i had friends boyfriends i got to play sports go bowling do things i have never done before in my life it felt so amazing. But then i hit a really ruff patch in my life i lost my best friend in a car crash i was having trouble in school and before long depperssion hit me bad then everything i had worked so hard forwent out the door i looked to food and i just let myself go a little so i got up to 150 pounds. Then when i was about 19 years old i met this guy i thought he was the one but he wasnt so we got married becasue i didnt know how he was like so when we did get married all he did was abuse me and beat me and i turned to food again so then weight just over came me. I want to have a child so bad right now with my new husband and i can not have any children right now i have pod because i am over weight so that really made me so deppressed for the longest time. So i didnt know what to do i went to the doctors and the doctor told me i had to lose weight so i didnt even know where to start i was like how am i going to do this because i didnt really have no support groups to help me lose the weight so i started weight watchers but then you have to pay $12 a week and it becomes way to much money when it all adds up at the end of the month... so my grandmother also had the surgery so she told my mother and i we should check the lap band out so we went to the class on september 8th and we saw what it was all about so my insurance company said that they would pay for me to have it done but i had to wait a 4 months perioud because i needed to do a 4 month diet before surgery and i had to go to doctors and i can sit here and say i am finally done with all of that so far now im just waiting to have my sugery.

Words can not explain how my life is changing already i feel so good about myself i thought to myself when this whole thing started i cant lose the weight before surgery because they want you to lose 5 percent so i said i cant do it and come to find out from september to now i did do it i lost 15 pounds and im feeling so good. One day i will be sitting here a 100 pounds lighter and have a beautiful family all because of the lap band and all the support i am getting from everyone this is going to be a journey for the rest of my life and i cant wait to keep continue it.....

I also wish you the best of luck with your journey as well i will be praying for you and i will be wishing you the best.... god bless... I really hope my letter helps you out a little bit and give you some inspriation...

sincerely, shannon....

Welcome everyone! This site is an interesting site and has all of the personalities that you could ask for both pro and con the band along with the human side of the personalities. It is in the end a great site for education and knowledge from those who have and are living the banded life.

I wish you all luck on your journey to getting banded and then on the process that will become yours to travel and implement post op!

Hi My name is Eileen, And thank you for your awesome entry. I was banded om 12/30/10. I am 53 yrs old and my highest weight was 384 lbs in september 2010. Ive lost 45 lbs so far with prep and my surgery. I was also feeling pretty hopeless. I remmember when I was 50, I had really talked myself into the fact that I was grossly over weight and that there was nothing

I could do. So i acutually was just going to eat myself into my grave. thank god that didnt last long someone introduced to me the Idea that I could have the lapband surgery. Well it took me three years to get up the nerve to do it. And I am so happy that I did.. Just remember your are never alone... Thanks Eileen:)

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

Good Luck this procedure is well worth it I am down to 249.6 lb please continue with the process..

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
