Something doesn't jive right with me about specific Pre-Op diet

Recommended Posts

I am seeing Dr Kim in Colleyville and received my daily pre-op diet instructions as follows for 21 days.

4 Protein shakes with skim milk or

5 Protein Shakes w/ Water

Water

crystal lite

sf Jello

unsweet tea

black coffee

Diet Green Tea

Koolaid sweetened with an artificial sweetner

Any 0 calorie, sf beverage.

Is this it?? Being in the medical field even I notice something is missing and I'm not going to do so well on this for 21 days.

Dr. Kim was who I had my initial consult with and if I could afford surgery in the US he would definitely be my pick. I really felt comfortable with his office staff and a coworker of mine had surgery with him in November 08. From when I went they had told me pre-op 2 weeks was strictly liquid, so to see that they've added some Jello, etc. sounds pretty exciting! lol

Dr. Kim is my surgeon and that's the same diet I followed. I only had to follow it for 2 weeks, pre-op, so I'm assuming you aren't getting the band.

It is very limited, but I got used to it after the first 2 - 3 days. It's best to follow the diet he gives because he is a great surgeon and he knows what he is doing. My liver looked good when my surgery date rolled around and I know it was a result of this diet. I'm sure it looked like a hot mess before the diet.

I am on day 3 of my 3 week pre-op diet - 2 shakes and 1 Protein Bar a day. The shakes can only be mixed with Water. I am then allowed 1/2 a cup of veggies and any diet/sugar free drinks I want. All about 800 calories a day. This is definitely the hardest thing I have ever done.

We don't have the same surgeon, but that was pretty much identical to my preop diet (which I was on for 3 weeks). First 3-4 days are pretty crappy...it gets better thereafter.

Yep, that is what I did, 5 drinks a day, (it sucked royally but I did it) and now I am at goal, if you want success, listen to him, he knows what he is doing. (You can also look up btrieger here on this site, he used Dr Kim too and as of this morning was 199 pounds and having a Tummy Tuck today. Do guys call it a tummy tuck? )

Should I be worried that my pre-op diet is only for 2 days ?

Nope. I had only a 1 day of Clear liquids the day before my surgery.

And I'll tell you an unofficial unscientific observation. Those of us who don't have to do a pre-op diet for weeks, tend to lose a little faster after the surgery. This is something I've noticed in talking to other bandsters over the past year & a half and I've had my observation confirmed by nurses who work in the bariatric field.

If you really are concerned.. call your doc's office and ask.

Nope. My surgeon doesn't do preop diets. The day before surgery I was on Clear Liquids and that was it.

This is crazy, some people have no preop diet other have a day or 3 others have a week some have 2 weeks yet others have 3 weeks? Makes you wonder why some require this tortureus diet so long before the surgery and others don't. I'm on day 3 and Its going to be a long 11 days before my surgery.

I feel lucky with my pre-op diet after reading through this. I get to have an egg and/or yogurt or toast or Protein shake or bar, followed by a Protein Shake, then 4 to 6 oz of meat and a vegetable and then a Protein Shake for dinner. Had a few tough moments but this seemed to be more of a "practice" time for after than anything else. Although I am 12 days in (with a day "off" for Thanksgiving and a couple of slip ups) and down 6.4 lbs so it must be working.

I am with Dr. Marsden in Argyle, TX - he is one of the top docs which is why I picked him. He is pretty laid back and his staff is terrific. I am really hungry today, but I now know I need to keep my complaining to a minimum  Hang in there!!! Sending positive thoughts!!

I agree that bariatric surgeons are all over the place with this. Why isn't there some standard requirements? I think most do it to shrink you liver, thus making it easier for them to place the band. I don't know if it has any benefit to you. I do agree that those who don't have to lose all this weight prior to surgery will surely lose more after.

I just have to comment on all of the responses that you lose less weight after surgery if you have a preop diet. I think this is something that a lot of people on lbt say but Its not accurate. Case in point, I lost 20 pounds on my preop diet and then 60 pounds in the 3 months following. The only scientific explanation for what may appear to be slower weight loss after surgery for those with a preop diet is that the more you weigh, the more calories your body burns to function on a daily basis. if you lose weight before surgery you will naturally be burning less calories daily than you did before you lost your preop weight. Hypothetically, if 2 people (who are identical...clones of each other) start at 290 pounds and Person A does a preop diet and weighs 270 at the time of surgery and person B does no preop diet and weighs 290 at the time of surgery, person B's body will be burning more calories daily as they weigh more than person A. Thus they may lose that initial 20 pounds very quickly (at the same rate that person A lost the initial 20 on the preop diet). The rate at which one loses weight is a simple formula of calories in vs calories out (in minus out equals your daily calorie deficit. If there is a deficit of 3500 a week you will lose one pound a week). I feel that it's unfair to tell people that there is a correlation between no preop diet and faster rate of weight loss post op as it's just not true. Just telling it like it is.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
