January 2011 Bandsters !!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on january 3rd so i am at my three weeks on Monday. I have lost 35 pounds since i started the preop diet. down from 290 5 weeks ago and now im 255!!! i lost a lot in the begininng but its definetly slowing down. I also feel that i can eat more now as well which isn't good for the weight loss. I get my first fill on my birthday of course... feb 2 so i am hoping that the fill helps! i dont want to eat a lot! haha! my doc told me that if i am hungry, then eat... but dont snack! snacking is the hard part for me!

really want to go to a support group on monday and hopefully i can get my motivation back to eat well. i haven't been excercising as much as i should either. i have a gym memborship but i am dreading going there for the first time in months!

i know once i go once, it wont be so bad, but i just hate all the skinny and in shape people. i feel huge and stupid!

I know how you feel but keep this in mind. You are braver than ALL of them. You knew you needed help and you got it. And soon enough, you'll be one of those in shape people. And, if you pay attention, you'll notice those people aren't looking at you...they are gazing at themselves in the mirror :P

I am scheduled to get my surgery done on January 31st in Medford, OR. I have been waiting for insurance approval for three years and it is grear to know I do not have to wait any longer. I have had so many test and appointments, that I will be glad when the surgery is over and I can start my new life adjustment. Geez think about it we have a second chance in our life to make better choices to keep ourselves healthy.

Good luck on your surgery if you havent had it yet.

Dora

If you're planning on being banded in January your either half way thru your 6 month wait or you've just recently met with your surgeon and you're beginning your 3 month wait filled with dr appts and nutrition classes.

I have aetna and I only have to wait three months but it'll be filled jam packed w/ dr appts and classes, etc...

I went to see a pulmonologist last week and he wants me to get a breathing test, chest x-ray and sleep study. Saw the GI yesterday and my endoscopy is set for 11/5 and my cardiologist is Friday - can't wait to see what HE has in store for me - haha --- I'm actually excited to get this "work up of the stars" --- how many others are thankful for all these tests (cause when else would we get them done??)

My BMI is under 40 and my last two years worth of weights was around a 35 but I have diabetes and high triglicerides...hoping that this is acceptable for aetna approval cause I'm gaining and not losing no matter what I do - I presently need to lose 80-90 pounds and there is no way I could do it on my own with the diabetes and hypo-thyroidism.

I'm curious to know who is getting banded in January (My surgery date is 1/18/11 if approved). I'd love to hear your stories and concerns - anything at all --- just want to put together a group for those that are planning a new life style come January - I can't think of a better new years resolution!!!! ~Renee

Hi everyone. Congrats to all the new banded people and to anyone who has received their date.

I was banded the 19th and I can't believe how well I am doing. I have had no pain at all. I was pretty sore on day 2, but not to much since than. I did fight a bit of tightness in my chest and shoulder from the gas for a few days. Honestly it has been a great recovery thus far. I hope this is going to be a theme for my banding.

I only get hungry once or twice a day and have a Protein Shake or a bit of Soup and than I usually am fine for a few hours. I am looking forward to seeing the doctor on Thursday to have my staples removed and find out where I go from here with food and exercise. I know to be patient, but just want to confirm how long I am looking at to be back to "normal"

I hope everyone has as good of an experience as I have had thus far. I pray mine will keep up.

Thanks

Congrats for the coming surgery day!! i was banded on 1/17/11.. the only advice i can give u is to walk as much as you can! you will probably feel sore and very bloated feeling (GAS). the first night( i was out of the hospital by noon on my suregery day) was rough i had a hard time getting comfortable with the pressure. day 2 got better but waliking was still the only relief from the gas and pressure. i would walk for as long as i felt comfortable then i would sit in a recliner and kick back it felt so much better. Everyday from then on got better and better the gas would go away for a while then come back its very weird. The pain in your abdomen is gonna be hard to decifer, its a mix of incision, muscle, gas, and hunger pains. I had a hard time drinkin my Water and drinking my Protein Shakes as it made me feel even more bloated. You have to remember to drink your Protein even though you dont feel like it. Well good luck and if you have any questions about anything let me know.

My surgery was 1/21/11. I went home the same day. I felt great that day and felt like I hit a wall the next. I wasn't prepared for the gas pains, and being a proper southern girl, expelling it didn't come naturally. lol I also wasn't prepared for the 4 lb gain from the fluids in the hospital. I lost 12 lbs on the pre op diet and I'm down a total of 13.5 now. Only a million to go! ;)

I'm really looking forward to the support and information here. :)

Hello January Bandsters!

Just joined the site... looking for words of wisdom

My surgery is scheduled for Friday, the 28th... and despite being VERY ready, I AM nervous ...primarily about waking up in pain and nausea and that general 'post anesthesia' feeling that I hate :(

Thanks to all for sharing your experiences... it really does help :)

Hi January Bandsters,

I am now 2days post-op. I feel sore but this morning was alot better than yesterday.

I am craving food (I did not have to do a pre-op diet) and not feeling fulfilled on liquid.

I am desperately after recipes with some flavor or substance and i know its hard due to this being a liquid only stage.

My surgeon has said all went well and everything is where it should be.

What I am nervous about now is what if i dont lose the weight after going through all this

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
