January 2011 Bandsters !!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I have been lurking on these boards for a few weeks, but I figured I might as well say hello since my surgery is TOMORROW with Dr. Kelly in TJ Mexico. I am both excited and nervous. I've been reading so much really good and really bad stories that I have convinced myself that I'm either gonna feel no pain or have some crazy complication. lol. It's so nice to have a place to get support. I am a 25 year old master's student and I just got engaged and this is a great time for me start this journey! Wish me luck.... :)

Hi Calibander!

How funny... I lurked for a few weeks myself!

I have to say, I'm nervous about tomorrow, too.... my greatest anxiety revolves around the immediate post-op period... when they've just extubated... and you're not asleep... but not awake... yet you can TOTALLY feel pain and nausea.... hate that with a passion :o

Do you live in Southern Cali???? My husband is Navy... we've lived in San Diego a couple of times.... and will be back there this summer for a couple more years.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow... best of luck... meet you on the other side ;)

I'm finally getting to leave the hospital in about an hour. Just wanted to mention that I have had NO signs of hunger. Pretty cool. And walking really is best for the pain, even if its just a 2 minute walk. The rest of you going this month will do great! I am so thankful that its been a breeze so far.

Hi January Bandsters,

I am now 2days post-op. I feel sore but this morning was alot better than yesterday.

I am craving food (I did not have to do a pre-op diet) and not feeling fulfilled on liquid.

I am desperately after recipes with some flavor or substance and i know its hard due to this being a liquid only stage.

My surgeon has said all went well and everything is where it should be.

What I am nervous about now is what if i dont lose the weight after going through all this

I have that same fear. I had my first post op check up yesterday and I was terrified that I hadnt lost any weight and had put myself through all this pain and discomfort for nothing. But then I got on the scale and was down 13 pounds. All I'm saying is, don't drive yourself too nuts with the fears!

I was banded on tuesday, do u feel any growling in your stomach?

Not only could feel it at that point, but everyone could hear it! Lol....this surgery is slowly but surely teaching me to respect the hunger!

I feel like one of the last ones to be banded this month lol.

Im glad I read your stories and thank you so much for sharing. I do believe reading them is a blessing but a curse for me. Im scared beyond belief but at least Im fully aware of the worst case normal scenerios, more of an idea what is ok and what is not normal. I spend tomorrow packing, getting last minute items, etc. and then leave at 3am and from there...my journey begins. As my facilitator said to me today "Tomorrow you are one day closer to a whole new you"!

No you're not, I'm getting banded on the 31st :D

I went out to get some more broth and Jello today and then I'll wait until Sunday to finish up preparing what I need at the hospital. I'm the first one of the day, checking in at 5am. It feels very surreal right now.

One thing I wasn't prepared for was after losing 12 lbs on the pre-op diet, they put several bags of fluids in me for the surgery. I came home 4 lbs heavier. It was a little shocking. I mean, it was logical, but a little heads up would have been great! lol

I'm 6 days post-op and completely pain free. I've been back to my regular life routine for 4 days now and feel fantastic! Every morning when I step on the scale is like Christmas. The liquid diet has been easier when I remember that "I eat to live not live to eat." This comes from a confirmed foodie, too. I watch cooking shows, I cook for my family and others, too. I'm known as a cook. I'm having to figure out who I am now. This is really an exciting journey in several ways. I'm so excited!!!

I think the growling is gas, not hunger. My stomach sounds like a motorcycle! Lol

Haha me and my husband were laughing about my stomach "talking" last night. He just kept asking me "and you're not hungry?" And I wasnt. But the "Full" feeling is diffently different after being banded. Its hard to explain but its almost like I physically am full not my stomach is full, if that makes since. Could be the gas too since I'm only Day 3 out. I was operated on so late on Saturday that by the time I was out of recovery I just chalk that as my surgery day and Sunday was Day 1 for me.

I had my surgery Friday Jan 28th in TJ Mexico. I am now home and recovering quite well. I'd say now I just feel like I have the flu - kind of achy, tired, and a little tightness in my chest. Nothing unbearable - just uncomfortable! I am just freaking out about how I am going to be on Clear Liquids for a week. I am already feeling pretty weak and dizzy since I haven't had anything to eat since last Wednesday. juice and broth is not cutting it and I have to work tomorrow! Any words of wisdom or advice are welcome!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
