Protein drinks????

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a question my surgery is scheduled for April 12th and I have seen the nutrionist three times and she gave me a food plan for when I start eating solids but my surgeon hasn't told me anything about drinking Protein Shakes or anything. I don't see him again until the day of surgery, I know there is just a one day pre-op Clear Liquids and that is it. How do I know how much Protein I will need each day right after the surgery? I need to start stocking up on the drinks I don't have much time left. And can anyone recommend anything that tastes decent?

Hi, I will be banded on march 19th and I was told immediately after surgery to do Isopure from GNC, its protein Water in addition to crystal light and sugarfree popsicles also broth this will give you energy and help you to heal faster. For my Protein powder I like Jillian michaels vanilla and body fortress whey protein from Walmart also Protein Shots from walmart are pretty tasty to me.

Hope this helps!!!

I am surprised that your surgeon's office hasn't given this information to you yet.....I suggest you call the office and ask them for printed information on what they want/recommend you to eat post-op.

My surgeon's office gives each patient a large binder with lots of information. One section is all about the first few weeks after surgery, what to expect, what to eat, and info like that.

The nurtirtionist told me how much Protein per day I should be consuming.

My FAVORITE Protein Drink is Premier Protein ready-to-drink drinks from costco.

Good Luck!!!

Hi , I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and have graduated to soft solids. I still do the Protein Shakes, I purchase body fortress whey Protein from Walmart as well,it tastes great they have choc, vanilla and strawberry flavors. I like the way it tastes its cheap $12 for 2lbs. In the morning I always use it to start my day with protein its good with skim milk as a shake with ice ,or sometimes i heat it in the microwave and it tastes like hot coco. This has very little sugar and carbs and 1scoop is 26 Proteins. At my Dr the nutritionist and Dr gave a amount of protein for the day ,I should have 52 grams a day. You should give them a call most offices have someone available to talk to. Good luck with your surgery.

Check out the Bariatric Eating website- they have lots of options for Protein supplementation. Everything I've gotten from them so far has been really good. It's REALLY important that you get things that have the best quality protein- whey or soy isolates. Some of those "bullets" are based on Gelatin Protein, which is nowhere near as bioavailable.

I was given very specific instructions as to what and how much to eat at each stage...I'd get back in touch with your nutritionist if you haven't been given that information as yet. I wasn't given a calorie count per se, but I was told that I needed to get 70-89 grams per day of protein post-op. I'm using the tools on the Allergan Lap Band site to keep track.

Hope that helps- good luck!

Christine

I have been drinking the carnation sugar free drinks. They are very good and not hard to get down. Make sure they say sugar free.

You will more than likely get a packet of information when you are discharged.

What tastes decent will be different for everyone. My suggestion is go to a few places around town and buy one drink at a time. The smoothie shops usually have some different ones, along with health food stores and places like GNC. Walmart, Sams Club and other places are also starting to carry more.

The ones I like the best so far have been the Fruitein by Natures plus and nectar by Syntrex. Both are more of a fruity taste.

I'm not terribly surprised that your doctor hasn't discussed postop Protein with you. Mine is okay with Protein supplements postop--but doesn't recommend their routine use. I can sub one for a meal, or use them when I'm having difficulty getting solid protein in, but they are not part of the standard recommended postop fare.

I do use them. I have one each morning, and often one at night, too. (My calorie level is too low, with exercise, otherwise; even with 2 shakes, I barely hit 800 calories. I don't usually have difficulty getting enough protein from food, though.)

The very best ones I've tried are Inspire Protein Powder shakes from bariatriceating.com.

The bullets/shots are appealing, and I know lots of people here swear by them, but I would skip them. First, they're more expensive than many. And some will tell you that's because they contain so much more protein, proportionally. But they are not made up of the protein best absorbed by the body (whey protein isolate)---which greatly diminishes their value. A few years ago, they were the best available protein. Now they no longer fill the bill.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
