pain in port area after running....

Recommended Posts

I just started run/walking on my new tredmill. Last night while running my port area felt strange, almost like I irratated sp) it or something. Today while doing dishes I leaded into the sink & felt a little discomfort/cramping in port area. I called doc & left a message. Anyone ever have this??? TY!

YOu could have pulled some scar tissue that you form around your port. Or even a stich that holds you port in place

Yup... talked to my doctor about it. He told me it's because I'm losing weight! He said that because the port is attached to my abs and you use your abs while runningwalking it could be rubbing up against my ribs which is causing the soreness. He told me that I'm probably going to need a "skinny girls port" in a few months time. See what your doctor tells you too! Good luck! :blushing:

well my doc sent me in for a CT scan yesterday. She thinks a stitch may have come undone. Waiting on results now. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks for info!

Well, apparently a scan does not even show if you pulled out a stitch. :frown: I guess she did the scan to make sure everything was still working right. Did GI ect. Scan was good. BUT she thinks I may have pulled a stitch. So, she is hoping it will just heal on its own. :frown: If it keeps bothering me she will go in & move my port down.

Plus when I start exercising again I will wear a binder around my belly for more support. Just ordered one for $15.00 This is where I am at for now. :frown:

I wear a really tight compression shirt to hold my stomach down as much as possible. If I don't, my port hurts. I bet the binder will work great! :crying:

Hi! Do you wear it only when you exercise? What kind of exercise do you do? I think it was the jogging that bothered my port. It is a bit more sore again today. I tried to do some picking up yesterday around the house. It's frustratingwhen you can't bend down. I have 3 little girls to pick up after & my house is falling apart! Not to mention now the stomach flu is starting in the house. Thats all i need is to get that!

Hi! I hope the stomach flu doesn't invade your house!! That would be awful!

Hopefully your port pain will go away soon too so you can bend over again! That was the most frustrating part of surgery for me.

I run, walk and use the elliptical for exercise. I wear my compression shirt whenever I run or use my elliptical since they cause my chubby tummy to bounce around more  My port is right under the largest part of my stomach so it really pulls if I do any major jumping/bouncing.

I am having a lot of pain where my port is after running. I had my band in march of this year and have lost close to 70 pounds. I started running in april and have done several 5k races so far this summer. My next race is 4 weeks away and I am finding now that when I'm running I start getting some pain in my port area and then the next day it hurts too. It feels like a pulled muscle. I was just reading this thread and am wondering if I should be wearing something more supportive when I run. I do find that I'm sucking in my stomach when I'm running and I try not to thinking that might be why I'm hurting.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Karen

I'm happy I found this thread! I've lost 84 lbs since my 9/3/09 banding, but within the past 3 weeks, the port area has become sooo achy. I was banded in Mexico and have been mentally agonizing over the cost of a repeat trip for a repair of some kind. Now I realize that I probably overdid the exercise in an effort to lose the last 10 lbs. I'll try some sort of support around the waist and chill on exerting quite so much. The port feels like an intrusive hard thing and I wish it was smaller.

I've had that happen before. It feels like a cramp or bad gas. Is that what you felt?

Yes, it' feels like a cramp or a nagging pulling sensation. Haven't exercised in a couple days and it's much better. Not exercising isn't an option, so I bought what was described on the package as a waist cincher, only in a bigger size so it doesn't actually bind, just supports.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
