hair loss

Recommended Posts

like all my other issues are not bad enough, I have also been having heavy Hair loss the last 3 weeks...I mean a hair LOSS that is starting to be very noticable. I am nearly 4 months out from surgery and was wondering if this was normal?

I try to get between 80-100 grams Protein each day, adn thought this was about adequate, I also take 2 Multi Vitamins a day!

Hi. Okay, same thing happened to me, and I started freaking out. I went to a nutritional MD and they did all sorts of blood work on me, and being this was three years ago I'll tell you what I remember. I do remember I was on about 17 Vitamins, which newly banded without the restriction I could actually tolerate, but as time went on, not so much. Despite the attempt at Protein my Iron was low, folic acid low, b1, b6...i was taking fish oil capsules, b1, b6, SILICA, had a few B12 injections and this doctor did IV Vitamin infusion. to be honest I don't think much of it helped. Some people react to the surgery itself, some people react to the sudden loss of calories. It's like if the body thinks it's going to die of starvation it puts its resources into organs and not things like hair and nails. I think it did mellow it out a little, but it wasn't until I stopped the dramatic weight loss and stayed in a 5 lb range for a few months that it really stopped. I don't think it will ever be as thick as it was, but it's not falling out anymore. It's really freaky, I know. try not to focus on it, don't put your hair back more than you need to. My dermatologist also gave me a mousse called olux to try and calm the follicles. My first stop for you would be an endocrinologist or another doctor who can take a whole blood workup of you and interpret the results in a way that makes sense for you. Good luck  If you're in the NYC area I can give you the nutritional doc's name :)

I am thinking it is a combo of the surgery and sudden weight loss of 55+ pounds in less than 4 months...

I had this hair loss when I had an emergency C sect 22 years ago!

I have no fill yet, so will try to add some folic acid and fish oil to my Vitamin intake!

Thanks for the info!

actually you can get the kids versions of the folic acid as well as the fish oil...the folic acid kids is chewable. if you go for the fish oils, i don't remember the brand, but make sure you get the one that is lemon flavored, otherwise any sort of repeating is really gross.

I started losing hair too and read alot about it. My friend recommended I try Therapro Shampoo and conditioner plus the pills they make. I also started taking high quality Vitamin supplements. (Kind of expensive). I also started taking Thyroid supplements even though my thryroid results are in the normal range. The good news: MY HAIR IS GROWING BACK. The bad news: I dont know which change made the difference. So I am going to keep on doing all the things I have been doing. I am SO THRILLED that my hair is coming back...I have had nice hair my whole life and it was devastaing when i could see my scalp from all the Hair loss.< /p>

I'm over 2 years out. My first bout of Hair loss was at 6 months out. It lasted a few months, but came back quickly. I was fine for a while and then it started again about 7 months ago. It was coming out in clumps and was NOT growing back this time. My blood work was perfect. The surgeon suggested Biotin and some fancy Shampoo. I was already taking biotin. Had been for a long time. Nothing was working. I took Vitamins. Everything was good. I went to my regular doctor and complained, and he told me that some people just require extra zinc when dieting and that it doesn't work for eveyone, but was worth a try. He said it also strengthend the immune system during cold and flu season, so I figured, what the heck. I started taking it, and low and behold....VOILA..... My hair started growing back within 4 weeks. It's getting thick and healthy again. So, if you haven't tried it, do. It's inexpensive and I have to say, I haven't had a cold this winter either.....

How much zinc do you take daily, out of curiousity?

StephanieF,

I take 50 milligrams a day. It's not recommended to take more than that as it can interfere with other minerals in the body and their absorption. Do some research on zinc. It's amazing all the things it helps with. Google it. You'll see where it's documented to help fight hair loss among other things.

I also had major Hair loss about 3 months after surgery. I went to the doctor, had all types of blood tests, which were all normal. I tried Biotin, I tried every type of multi Vitamin I could get my hands on. I even tried that expensive Shampoo. Nothing worked. Then one of my nursing instructors suggested I take prenatal Vitamins. I thought "yea right, that won't work." But I was desperate, so I decided to try them. They worked! My hair stopped falling out and looks so much better! I just bought the cheap kind from Walmart.< /p>

My nutritionist told me to take 2 Tbs of extra virgin olive oil a day. Whether i just down it or put in in some food, it is an essential oil and doesnt give you the fish burps that Fish oil gives.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
