    Laxatives?

I was added to a group on Facebook for a surgeon in Mexico and I saw some post that the surgeon has them take Magnesium Citrate a few days before surgery. Has anyone that didn't go to Mexico, do the same thing? My doctor told me that I need to "stay on top of it" because if we are cleared out, it makes it easier on us after surgery. Less gas and pain. But she didn't really give any suggestions or anything. If you did have to take something, what do you recommend and what was post op like for you? Please do not say "every doctor is different, ask your surgeon." Ugh. I'm asking for everyone's experience. I swear I get dumb responses like that all the time, and I know that. The whole point of this forum, is for support and to learn from others.

    2 DAYSS

Honestly, today is just one week post op and I haven't found much of anything to help me. The emotions are still all over the place. Ive been told it's typically 2 weeks or so before you're back to normal. I hope I didn't scare you. Some people have zero problems with the hormones causing emotional issues, some people have only a slight problem and then others like me have a pretty hard time. There's really no way to know how each of us will react, but I think it's better to be prepared for this one just in case. The most important thing is to have your support person understand that this is a possibility. That way they are prepared and they understand it is only temporary. I was truly, legitimately ANGRY about having lost only 1 pound in the 5 days post op. I was crying and yelling and wanting to call my surgeon and scream at him. Of course I now see how absolutely illogical and ridiculous that was but in the moment it was very real and the fury I was feeling was real. That's just an example. Most of my emotions have leaned more to very sad and crying as opposed to anger. I was crying because I felt hungry and I thought that meant I was too fat and disgusting to succeed at WLS because I kept telling myself I shouldn't feel hungry. Just things like that... completely illogical things. But, as we know, emotions aren't always logical. So, just have your support person be there for you and show you kindness and compassion no matter how utterly ridiculous your mood swings may appear to them. And if things really do get too bad, your surgical team is familiar with this happening to patients and will be able to help you. Perhaps maybe even prescribing a mood stabilizer or anxiety medication for a couple of weeks if needed. June 12, 2017 I had my lap-band removed, my gallbladder removed and received an RNY. I'm just four weeks out and I can drink water easily. It's not forever for some of us. It was a huge concern for me. I used to be able to drink a half of a bottle at once and while I can't do that I can take three huge swallows with no pain as long as my stomach is empty. Can't wait to hear your journey!

I wish you good luck and many blessings in your journey. My best advice is to start working on changing your relationship with food now. Figure out what your issues are and do whatever you need to do to start addressing them. Because you are going to Mexico for your surgery you will need to do this largely on your own. I also had my surgery in Mexico and I scheduled it 2months out so I would have time to do research and get myself mentally prepared. Stick with the plan your doctor gives you and ask questions on this forum or through whatever support system your doctor has set up for you. I went through Bariactric Pal and Dr. Illan and they have a Facebook page for patients and we have lifetime support with the nutritionist.

    Salad anyone?

I eat a salad almost daily for lunch! LOVE the skinny girl fat/sugar free dressing! I switch back and forth between balsamic and raspberry vinaigrette! I also make sure to use a 50/50 spring mix/spinach salad mix. The spinach is a good source of iron!!

Food isn't your best friend. It wasn't mine either. I love your list. You know that last one? "Love myself"? That's one you can start on right now. I remember looking in the mirror & hating my reflection. And that energy did nothing but make me feel worse. Don't beat yourself up. Please understand that food isn't your best friend - you are.

    Skinny Bucket List

this is a GREAT idea! I found it really helped me too. sometimes we get hung up on the things surgery forces us to "give up" (I almost didn't have my surgery because I thought I couldn't give up diet pepsi!)... but it's true we have so much to GAIN!!! yes I can likely never have pepsi again... but without this surgery, I'd have never worn a size 12 pair of shorts again, or played soccer again... or or or. keep this list handy! tape it to your mirror, put it on your fridge... it will help you get through the harder days.

Thank you guys for all the feedback!! I'm definitely not drinking again until I hit 6 months post-op, if not longer. I've never been a big drinker but being young and around it so often it's definitely hard to say no. Bachelorette parties and weddings at least once every two months, living in New Orleans, being single and going on dates. You name it. But that's what this whole decision was about - a lifestyle change to say no to the way I was living
