Tendonitis, Rotator Cuffs, and Changed Physiology

I just found this topic and I can relate. I have had frozen shoulder in both left and right in the past 2 years. I am coming up on my 5 year surgery anniversary this month and never connected the problem. My doctor told me this is a fairly common issue if you have type 2 diabetes and hashimoto thyroid. Thankfully both shoulders are better now but it sure was painful and limited my range of motion. I wonder if it is related to losing weight?

    Question of lower BMI patients

Everyone that I have talked to wishes they had done the surgery sooner. Why wait to improve your health? I lost weight in the 9 months before my sleeve which just made it easier after. Yes I lost a little slower but the important point was I got the metabolic reset so my body wasn't constantly fighting to get back where it was. You can do great no matter what weight you start with if you follow the program and do the work. Each step of the process has been a journey for me and I am still learning what I need to do to fuel my body to maintain my desired weight, physical health, and mental well being. It can be such a delicate balance. Be positive and never lose focus on your goal. You can do this!

I agree with what everyone has said on this subject of slight weight gain. It messes with our mental health at times, and finding the correct balance is not easy. I think it is aLao a moving target depending on our current health, ability to exercise, ect... .

I don’t think so. I am definitely planning to be more vigilant moving forward. I think being aware and therefore able to act is much better.

    Question of lower BMI patients

I am about 5'9" or just a hair under. My highest weight was 255 in Aug. 2016. I went on a low carb diet and got down to 230 by January 2017. I was 208 on the day of my surgery May 15th 2017. It took me about 7 months to reach my goal weight of 150. I maintained 150-160 until about 3-5 months ago when I gained to 165. The 15 # regain is well within the 10-20 pound that I have heard a lot of WLS patients deal with 2-3 years PO. I would like to be closer to 150 so I am actively working on losing the 15#. It is much harder at almost 3 years PO.- For me 15 # is almost 2 pants sizes. At 150 I am a size 6-8. At 165 I am a 10-12.
  6. I take one multi daily. My blood work was perfect last year. Some people with a sleeve do well as long as they can eat enough.

Yes. I hate treadmills so if the weather is crappy I will just hop on my elliptical instead. It has been so nice to get back out and stretch my legs. I know what it is to miss running. I hope you can get back to it soon.

That is a long time for a meal. I tend to eat fairly quickly and I know that fills me up much faster. Salad is a slider food for me. I can eat a large volume of salad if I don't have any protein with it. Tonight I had about 2.5 cups of salad greens, 2 table sp of walnuts, 2 grape tomatoes, a sprinkle of won-tons and a hard boiled egg. I am so full right now

Congrats!!! I know how happy you must feel. When I first got below 200 I was actually tearing up. I had mostly given up hope of seeing the 100's again.

That seems like a ton of food to me. I can’t eat more then 3 oz of meat with my veggies. If I have a salad I can eat it with 2 oz of chicken or tuna. I am truly amazed at how much you can eat in a day. You aren’t gaining any weight? I am jealous for sure.

I had the gastric sleeve. My high weight was 255, but I got down to 230 before my pre-op and was 208 the day of surgery . I am just a hair under 5' 9". I made goal about 7-8 months post-op at 150. I was able to maintain 150-160 until about 6 months ago when I started gaining and got to 165. I injured my knee and went from running 12-15 miles weekly to 0. I was just recently cleared to start running again, but it will be a while before I get up to those numbers again. I am taking it really slow as I am afraid to injure my knee again. You had quite a bit more to lose and I think you are doing well. If you started at 275 you have lost over 100 lbs!!

It is definitely frustrating, but I am determined to get back to 150-155 and maintain there. I sure hope you are able to reach your goal as well. We just have to stick with it and try to be patient.

Friday 2/7 33 months PO/ CW 163 ************************* I am frustrated with my body this week and I need to vent. I lost 5 lbs from 1/12 - 2/3. I rounded the number, and it is just shy of 1 month since I started tracking. I was happy with that progress. I stepped on the scale this morning and I gained half of that loss back in the past 4 days. In the last week I have burned more calories than the previous 3 months, with 2 running days and 2 elliptical workouts, and my usual walking. Intellectually, I know it is probably inflammation from the increased exercise, but it is still discouraging as I see myself losing at a snails pace. I put myself in this position with complacency, so I am to blame. Some may say I am over-reacting to a 15 lb gain, but the honeymoon period ended quickly for me and this could just as easily become 20 lbs. I feel like my metabolism has reverted back to super slow and I am going to have to accept this as my new normal and figure out how to work with it. I am going to try eating less cheese this week and more salad greens for lunch. From my perspective it sometimes feels like instead of just saying something like it is great that logging and weighing your food is working for you, intuitive eating proponents tend to act like they feel sorry for those of us who can’t or choose not to eat the way they do. I tried to change up the way I ate and went Whole Foods plant based for a few months as well as stopped logging my meals. I researched it and felt it was a great thing to do, but it just didn’t work for me long term. I am a firm believer in everyone needs to find what works for them, but when giving advice we must remember to quantify it with the reasons why it works for us and maybe some reasons why it might not work for others. That is my take on the subject.

lol I am such a dunce. That photo was probably a couple of years after the other. So still about 10 years ago. I really need to update my photos. Maybe tonight I will find a few recent ones and update my profile.

lol.. thanks, but I don't have any. If you click on that photo it will show the un-cropped image which has the granddaughter in question standing with me when she was 6- 7. So I have aged some. The reason I chose that photo is because that is how I saw myself in my head before my weight gain started. I was always the tall skinny girl. I could eat anything and never worried about my weight. Fast forward a few years and my immune system started silently attacking my thyroid and all hell broke loose. I gained 100lbs from the 145-150 I probably weighed in that photo. The metabolic dysfunction that took over ruined my health. So that photo was my inspiration post-op. It was from the last time I remembered feeling truly healthy and great. I should update it.

Can I eat whole wheat bread

I am almost 3 years post-op and bread is still a very occasional treat. I know different doctors have different diet plans, but bread is mostly just carb calories so I don't waste my stomach space with it. I think protein is usually the main focus 5 weeks out. I would try a lettuce wrap with the turkey.

2/5/20 I think I will eat the 8pm snack as planned so I am posting this now. The strawberries will be gone tonight and now I am craving them. This is what happens when I decide to eat a little fruit. It may very well be worth it as long as my blood sugars stay on target and I keep up my running. Today was my granddaughters 19th birthday so I went to lunch with her and a bunch of co-workers at TGIF. I went over my carb goal today, but it is what it is.... 7 am- coffee/cream 10 am- coffee/cream 12:30 pm- grilled chicken breast with bacon, pepper jack cheese, avocado, and ranch type dressing. A handful of fries and 2 mozzarella sticks. 4:30 pm- 3 turkey sticks with 3 squares of cheddar cheese 6 pm- coffee/cream 8 pm- vanilla yogurt with 4 strawberries Calories- 1079 Net Carbs- 32g Fiber- 7.7g Protein- 79g Fat- 54g Glycemic Load- 3.4

yesterday 2/4/20 My schedule was all messed up today because I had a doctors appt at 10:30 so I took a sick day off from work. It was 69 F here so I decided to go for a 2 mile run. My knee is still doing good. I ran about 60% and walked the rest. Slowly but surely I hope to get back to running 15-20 miles a week. 9. am- coffee/cream 12 pm- 3 smoked turkey sticks with 6 small squares cheddar cheese 1 pm- coffee/cream 2pm- diet green tea with handful of walnuts 6 pm- large salad with a hard boiled egg, walnuts, sliced avocado. I just got home from seeing the ortho doc about my shoulder. I have what is called frozen shoulder and he explained that the likely cause was my autoimmune issues. It seems my immune system got tired of attacking just my thyroid and is now focused on my left shoulder too. Bummer. He said it may take up to two years to fully resolve itself and could spread to my right shoulder also... Just great.... Ok, pity party over. The bright side is most cases resolve without surgery and I just need to do some specific exercises daily to help it along. If the pain is ever too intense I can opt for a ultra sound guided cortisone shot. I skipped the shot for now and will just focus on learning the exercises and praying my right shoulder is spared.
