I'm nine weeks out and already so low carb that I've been reading a book about Atkins and thinking of starting the induction phase tomorrow. Just thinking about mixing things up a bit. I can do low carb Protein Shakes (Jay Robb + unsweetened almond milk) so I'm really only talking about changing dinner and Snacks at this point. Is anybody doing Atkins? If so, how's it going? Do you have any advice? Anybody gotten guidance from their NUT about it? Thanks!

I did Atkins several times prior to WLS. I always lost weight, but would pile it back on once I started eating "normally" again. Just like every other fad diet out there. My suggestion for post WLS success is to create habits and an eating pattern that you can follow for the rest of your life. If the Atkins lifestyle is something that appeals to you then great! But if not, then work on developing your own plan that gets you to your goal and allows you to stay there.

Hi there!

I have been following a very low carb diet since day one of surgery. It's working for me. I'm sure it's similar to Atkins. I stay under 24 carbs a day. When I reach goal weight, I will increase to about 45-50 a day just to maintain. I'm not gonna lie...I miss me some chips and potatoes!- an occasional craving! But so far I have been happy and very satisfied on my low carb diet and havent wavered. I feel like it have become a lifestyle change, residing carbs for the rest of my life and I'm fine with that. I'll never want or require as many carbs as I used to eat pre-surg.

Kel,

Thanks for your reply. How much fat are you eating?

The Atkins diet is now usually referred to as the Keto diet or Ketogenic diet, which I also follow and enjoy. The premise is using your fat as primary source of energy rather than carbs.

I think you should absolutely do it and see how your body adapts. As for me, I have lost all hunger pains and do not crave sugar or carbs like I use to even post opp eating my meal plan. I have lost about 10 pounds this month so far, (first 20 days) so I like that as well.

The best thing about this diet, is I do believe it can be sustained as a sleever, as you are already 80% there as others have commented.

My macros I try and hit are 30 grams net carbs, 75-100 grams Protein, and 100 + grams fat. (I try and stay between 1200-1500 calories per day.)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
