Its been a week post op and I feel horrible. Seems like everyone is better by now. I was feeling a little better each day the first 4 days and then worse and worse. It started when I started full liquids but I haven't been able to get more than an oz or so of most things. First i got short of breath and pounding heart. That lasted a few days and when it seems to improve now I have horrible nausea. I have been able to get my Water down but if I take a sip of anything else then I immediately have nausea that last forever. Not vomiting. Nothing to vomit. Some retching. Went to the er and they seemed a little bothered I was there. They did some cat scans and said everything was fine and that some people just feel this way and nothing they can do about it.

I don't think the ER has much patience with us gastric surgery patients (or anyone else sometimes, from my expert opinion). I suggest you go and see your surgeon if you are truly sick. Insist on coming in. Only you know your body and you should trust your gut instinct. I recently was hospitalized overnight following 8 hours of vomiting and was severely dehydrated. Good luck, because this is not the norm.

I was having the same problem when I was about 8 or 9 days out. I went to the emergency room they did xrays and they said that there was blood that pooled in my stomach and it had gotten very large and was laying on my stomach and that's what was causing all the symptoms . I had the exact same symptoms but I was also dehydrated which is what made me feel worse so they hook me up to IV gave me pain meds I stayed overnight but they said the blood that pulled in my stomach would just go away on its own. I will begin to feel better so its been about 3 or 4 days since then and I do feel much better.if the ER is not doing anything for you I agree you should call your surgeon or your doctor's office

week post op and I feel horrible

@@JustMeJFD

sorry you are having problems :(

glad that you are able to keep Water down :)

very important so you don't get dehydrated

short of breath, pounding heart

glad those symptoms are gone

but..........i don't think they should have happened so doc needs to know about

no vomitting???

thats great - that is horrible to go through

nausea - there should be a pill (i don't remember name) that doc can give you that will help

i agree with @@LindafromFlorida and @@joyann45 (both smart Cookies ;) )

give your doc a call - he has more compassion, feelings and expertise on your situation :)

good luck

feel better

kathy

Agreed with all said here about bariatric patients. Its like fat people get an easy way out and now you are complaining attitude. I know I've seen some major blame go around at times - or just get the surgeon. Right ...

I'm sorry for what you are going thru. Sometimes it does get better and that's what I'm hoping for in your case.

They did say that I had 'some fluid' in my abdomen. He said it was normal. They just say that it takes a long time for some people to be able to tolerate things. And it causes 'weird' symptoms. How long can I make it with no calories or nutrients? I know it's only been a week and maybe I am overreacting but its scary to me.

Fantastic. Many people are hesitant to call. As I have aged I demand more from them and do not settle for less that good medical care. Please post here and let us know what the doctor says. Your experience may help someone else.

Hey Linda be careful,

Mine got upset when I would call, even when I was directed to by PCP ... plastics ... I made sure to ask and they complained, stated "I pushed his buttons".

I will let you know. I feel like I'm going to get the same answer..... it just takes time. But we will see. I contacted my NUT and she said that it can take several weeks for some to tolerate any substantial nutrition. She suggested Unjury and Isopure and I have tried those. Actually unjury is the worst so far and it seems like most do pretty well with it. Another thought she suggested is to try soy Protein or egg protein because it could be a milk intolerance. I'll try and get up the energy to look into those tomorrow but going to the surgeon might be all I have in me! For today I'm just going to do Clear Liquids and try to get some relief from the constant nausea.

Dear Lord. I called also because I needed meds for gout and was told it would "eat" my new sleeve. The nurse was "out". I demanded to speak to the surgeon (great guy IMO). The nurse came on the phone as if by magic. I can find another doctor but I cannot find another stomach. I was treated very well when I told her the problem. There is a fine line, and if you make the staff mad, you are screwed, probably. Always be kind, complimentary and condescending.

Geez... Had the same issues. On top of nausea..GERD, gas, and profound hunger, often at the same time. Give yourself some time and love. This is the way your body is responding to major surgery! I couldn't vomit either! Also our relationship and view of food will be VERY different. You won't ever look at food the same way again. As for me, I look at food as a vehicle for Vitamin intake and not much else, since I don't even enjoy eating anymore! My family DOES NOT know that I had the procedure done, so this is a very lonely journey for me. I digress... You have only just made it through surgery and are going through 'growing pains'. Breathe and drink as much as you can while transitioning... Go slow and listen to your body signals of fullness. You'll be great!

Yes I have the hunger too. Sometimes I feel like I am nauseous because I am so hungry and empty. How long did all of this last for you?

This lasted a few months for me. Acid reflux was particularly bad. I was told to see the GI doc that was part of my pre-screen. He told me to stay away from chocolate (protein drinks) and them prescribed a pump inhibitor that I couldn't afford. That's where I started researching natural remedies.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
