Severe Neck and throat pain post surgery

:w00t:I am 3 days post surgery and the only pain I have ever had is from being intubated during surgery. The incisions are tender but my neck and throat are feeling like someone tried to strangle me!!! The muscles in my neck is in constant spasm and my trachea hurts like someone crushed it....it hurts to speak, it hurts to look downward to read, it hurts to lay down in bed...I have started taking motrin for the pain 800mg takes the edge off but this is serious pain....what could they have possibly done to me to make it hurt this long and this bad? Please tell me when this will go away!!! thanks for any help

Hi:

I haven't heard anyone else complain about so much pain in their throat and neck. You should probably call your surgeon to make sure things are okay.

Hope you feel better soon.

Sue

Did they give you pain meds???

I had some pretty bad neck and throat pain. It helped me to actually lay on my left side with a pillow proped under my neck and another pressed into my upper chest.

I also did large arm swings (like when in elementary school) a couple of times a day. This allowed the gas to escape and stretched my muscles. About 4 days for me......Hang in there. It will get better.

I had surgery last Friday to remove an ovarian cyst. I don't think I've ever had a rougher anesthesiologist. I had a fat lip and lost my voice. Looked like someone had hit me. Just over a week later and my throat is still sore, but the fat lip is almost back to normal. My neck doesn't really hurt, but you should contact your doctor to make sure. They do hyperextend your neck a bit when they intubate and it can be in a weird position for the entire surgery. Ibuprofen is a wonderful thing.
