No. I have a problem with the government enforcing yet another regulation. Will there be no end?

The dreaded "Will there be no end?", you are complaining about a regulation that helps you. Why would posting calories be bad? Do the people who make the menu's charge by the number of characters on the page? No, the real problem is if you knew how badly the restaurant business was treating your body you would chose to not eat there. So this regulation forces them to clean up their act, so they will have to serve quality food. Which cost them money. So they sell you on the fact that it is bad.

I am glad that the government regulates corporate america. Left to their own devices they would do everything they could in order to maximize profits, including selling defective products, creating unsafe working conditions, and putting consumers at risk.

I agree with Leigha that the restaurants have a lot to hide with the fat and sugar filled and salt satured foods they serve us. We have the right to know. And it will force them to serve healthier foods.

A fine example of what corporations will do is the tobacco industry. They created cigarettes that are more addictive than plain tobacco cigarettes would be. They advertized to lure kids into smoking because it looked cool. And the list goes on for them. And they're probably no different than most other corporations.

If you think that corporations just provide a product and then wait to see if it is going to be popular and consumed in massive quantities, you're fooling yourself.

The lenders that did such creative financing that they were able to lure people into buying homes they really couldn't afford is another example.

patty will say that's the person's fault who was suckered into becoming addicted to cigarettes or the one who bought a home that is now in foreclosure. Or the person who signed up for a credit card at one interest rate but then found out that if they happened to miss a payment, not only would they be charged a late fee but the original interest rate would be go up drastically for any outstanding balance.

I disagree that customers are responsible for corporate fraud and misleading business practices. I think corporations should be made to adhere to fair trade practices. The government is able to help protect Americans from companies that misrepresent their products and it should regulate them and keep an eye on them if they want to do business in this country.

I said PG rants against the government just for it being the government. Proof everyday. When people rant against their own self interest, they're just ranting because they can. Makes no sense. Does look like "toe the like rethuglican, just say no to everything, I wanna get elected at any cost, Scott Brown.

Exactly. And the proof is that I posted about the costs of corporate welfare, which is greater than people welfare. If spending and deficits were the REAL issue, then PG would rant about corporate welfare. And though she says she's against corporate welfare, all of her posts are against the programs that help the least among us, which shows her real agenda.

So, you see, it really isn't about spending and deficits, which is what I have been saying about her specifically and the whole teabagger movement generally.

You know, this just occurred to me. The republicans are "against the government", but our government is us. Its not some dictator or king, it is elected officials that we voted for, so if they are against "them" naturally they have to be against themselves. How can you believe in democracy if you think its "us" against "them"?

I've said this before. It is our government, we the people. How hypocritical it is for republicans to on one hand bash the government and on the other ask for us to give them a job in it. :bored: They act like if you give them a job in it, they will "fix" it. Well, we're living with their disastrous "fixes" from the bush administration: huge deficit, tanking economy, rising unemployment, recession, two wars and the list goes on....

What may be a 'good' thing for you may be yet another pain in the butt for someone else. When there are too many pains in the butt, you get aggrevation and higher costs for those who want to be in business. It may even be the last straw that turns people away from going into businesses of their own. This calorie posting thing is only one out of many thousands of regulations that small businesses have to comply with. When government keeps adding to the list, it gets costly, time consuming and aggravating. It even deters some people from even getting started in owning their own business, because they take a long look at everything the gov. requires just to open a restaurant, for example, and get turned off with all the petty regulations and requirements. Where once you could sell hotdogs on the side of the road, today you need to have a license and many other requirements just to eek out a living. I'm not saying that ALL regulating is bad, so don't go off on a tangent. But there needs to be a balance, and the gov. needs to back off some. It is too much now. Aren't they trying to create jobs? It seems to me with all their regulations, they are trying to deter people from owning businesses that employ people.

When I first started my daycare business, there was approx. 4 pages of rules and requirements for operating an in home day care. That was about 20 years ago. (before that people didn't need a license to babysit and get paid for it. Anyone could do it) 12 years later, the pages grew to 38. Everything from "a daycare provider could not keep her perfume on her dresser" to "the bathroom garbage can needed a lid on it". Absolutely these are good rules to follow when caring for children, but does the gov. really need to get involved in what people do in their own homes. It's not like a daycare that cares for 50 kids outside a home in a facility. Moms know that kids can swallow perfume if they get ahold of it. I raised 10 kids and always kept my perfume on my dresser and they never touched it. It's a matter of principle The gov. doesn't need to regulate and set sooooo many rules for us. This is what I refer to when I speak of some of those freedoms that are being taken away.

Then may I suggest you spend as much time researching it and the abuses by the private sector as you do people welfare and government abuses?

The reason the government has to step in is that it has been shown that left on their own the private sector will not self-regulate. Their goal is to maximize profits.

So, yes, I want my child being watched in someone's home to have mandated safety protections. Whether their own children touched the perfume or not is irrelevant, I don't want it where my child can get into it. And the caregiver doesn't have any "freedom" or "right" to have that perfume on the dresser if they are going to charge money and make a profit from me. Their freedom was their right to open up a place of business in the first place.

You are right when you say that we should protect the kids. But this is not the point I am trying to make. The point is the OVER regulation to the point of not wanting to bother with starting a business because your end profit does not justify all the work, regulations, requirements, etc. to get that $3.00 an hour you charge to watch someones child while they work. Where at one time you could babysit in your home and make money while staying home with your kids, today it isn't possible due to the government.

Do you know that in CT you have to buy a 'special' license to fiish in the Atlantic ocean? $45.00 a year! That used to be one of those things that Americans could do on their leisure time like riding a bike or walking in the park or hiking that was free to enjoy. But the gov. needed to get involved. It was just another way for them to make a buck so they could continue to support all those wonderful programs that they have that gives things away for free. Oh, and of course now they have to employ wardens to cruise the Atlantic and fine those who don't comply. These government workers make two to three times more than the average private sector jobs, they get lavish HC and retirement and pension benefits as well as much more sick time and personal time than anyone else in a regular job. The government simply wastes our money like no tomorrow!

Elder care and child care businesses are probably the most regulated businesses we have. And for very good reason. Bad people were abusing old folks and children. They were not feeding them properly. Not keeping them clean. Physically hurting them. Not carrying adequate insurance. And other things that are too numerous to mention.

Having lots of regulations on those types of businesses is absolutely mandatory. And obviously if those are the businesses you've been in you have reason to complain about all the red tape. But it is necessary and although you seem to think people would be fine without so many regulations on those businesses, the opposite is true.

Restaurants can kill people with the improper handling of food so it is important that they have regulations to prevent that. Restaurants must have lots of oversight because people's health is at stake.

But many small businesses have virtually no government regulations to speak of. You should think about getting into another line of work if you believe that you're over-regulated by the government. The government oversight to protect the public from bad people with bad business practices is necessary, right and good.

With the population of this country and the mindset that anything goes as long as you're making money, we're likely to need more regulations, not less.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
