I am scheduled to be banded on January 4th. ( if I don't chicken out) I have been going back and forth with this decision for about 6 months now. One day I don't want to do it and then the next day when I can't fit in my clothes, I am all ready to get it over with! I hope I'm not the only one that feels this way. I am going to be 57 a few days after the surgery and I keep asking myself do I really want to do this at my age? I am diabetic and take insulin 3-4 times daily and also have high blood pressure so I know that losing this 50 or so pounds will probably help me there but I get so scared when I think about giving up all the foods that I love and also the throwing up thing. I HATE throwing up!!! Anyway, good luck to all of you January bandsters and I hope I will be one of you. Maybe we can start some kind of special thread just for us so we can keep up with each other. I would do it, but not sure how to. Maybe one of you can start one.

:D:)

We are the same age and getting banded in the same month, so how about we become cheerleaders for each other and lap band buddies? It also sounds like we have about the same amount of weight to lose. I have rheumatoid arthritis, so we both have other diseases to deal with. I don't know about you, but for me there is no such thing as a stable weight. left on my own, whatever i weight now will only go in one direction, and if i lose weight, I will regain it again. your diabetes and high blood pressure could very well GO AWAY COMPLETELY by doing this. and many people can still eat the foods they like after banding, just a lot less of it. Shall we bond?

I am getting banded in Juarez Mexico at Hsopital Angeles on January 21, 2010. I am 58 and diabetic with sleep apnea so I really need to do this for a number of reasons but mostly I think I want to do it for me. I have struggled with weight for 25 years and when I quit smoking in 2005 I gained another 30 pounds substituting mint ice cream for Kools. That is when I was diagnosed with type II diabetes.

I used to be able to take off about 10% of my body weight with strict diet and excercise and then say okay I am in control but as I get older it seems to much harder and lately not working at all. I love to "gobble down" a good juicy steak with a rich Cab Sav and I am scared sh.......... less about giving that up or going to the tiny portions but I will be sixty in two years and need to be back in shape and healty so "here goes".

Would love to stay in touch as we go through.

Hi -

I am thinking that January will be my time. I am self-pay so I will not have to wait on ins or ins-diet. I go to a support meeting on Thursday to talk to some of the patients that the doctor has worked on. I have already been to his seminar. I guess from there it is a consult and the pre-op testing. So, however long it takes for those appts and then surgery. Maybe February if the process of appointments take longer. Btw....I am NOT telling most family and friends. My hubby and 11y/o know and my mother (since I will need a sitter for my 2y/o) I don't want to feel like I am under a microscope to lose weight and they are just waiting for me to fail, again:bored:.

Great! Our own little support group. All my paperwork is going in tomorrow. All I had to do was blood, EKG, psych and nutritionist. No swallow the barium, no sleep test, no stress test...How about you guys?

So happy for you and not having to jump through hoops! Woo-hoo! How long did it take and what is your insurance? What tests did you have to have before you submitted to your insurance?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
