I had surgery on Tuesday, 8-25-09 & was back to work by 8-28-09 (Friday) - desk job. Mowed a good sized lawn on 8-29-09 (Saturday) - not a riding lawn mower. Walked dogs for 4 miles on Saturday - 4 days after surgery. I guess it all depends on how active you are before the surgery as to how fast you can recuperate.... the only twinge I felt was if I had to bend over or drive over a pothole. One other thing to mention - you can't drive while on pain meds (risk a DUI), so try not to take them when you come out of the hospital the next day. That way they will be out of your system when you do drive.....

Good Luck!

Hi there,

I am well on my way to telling you how long it will take. I had my surgery on Monday of this week, spent one night in the hospital, and plan to be off until the day after Labor Day. I am a teacher (first grade) and I hope it will only be a week before I am feeling better. I am really sore, but I am able to walk several times a day and I think I will be fine. My surgery couldn't have gone better, and I am feeling great about the whole process! Good luck!:blushing:

I was banded Aug 27/09 and am not back to work till the 8th of Sept. I walked about 4 miles yesterday and think I definitely could have handled going to work yesterday. Feeling pretty good except for the bloating and some pain on my left side. Although my job is not what I would consider to be physically demanding I do have to go in and out of the office a number of times a day to meet clients so I hope you might feel good enough :blushing:

I had surgery on Thursday was back to work on Tuesday. The worst part was the pain where the port is and I bought a rib belt (support) at the pharmancy so I could walk with out all the pain. It is doable!

Banded on Thursday morning - went home that afternoon/evening and was doing housework the next day (Friday) and back to work on Monday. I do have a desk job and I did have to unzip my jeans and pull my shirt over because the waist band fell right at my port incision but I am a firm believer that me walking the halls less than 2 hours after surgery made all the difference in the world! I cleaned the house and cooked a pulled pork the next day and stayed really busy so I would crash at night and sleep through the night. I refused all pain meds at the hospital and never even filled the script for Lortab. I had some soreness but nothing that the liquid Extra Strength Tylenol could not wipe out. I went into this whole thing with a "mind over matter" attitude as I am usually a cry baby and don't handle aches or pain well. I TOLD myself I was feeling strong and there was no pain and it worked! I'm actually kind of still playing little mind games with myself 5 weeks post op with the mind over matter stuff. It took me 3 months to build up to 8 minutes on the elyptical before the surgery and now, 5 weeks post op I went back to the gym for the first time this Monday and TOLD myself I COULD DO 10 minutes on that thing and I ended up doing 15! Then yesterday I TOLD myself I could do 25 and DID and this morning I said 30 minutes and did. It's a little strange but it's working for me! I'm getting stern with myself and hey, it's working! Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
