Hi all i just got banded on 8/10/09 and wanted to know when can you have sex after the band? Sorry but i need to know. Also im just asking just to know social drinks happen when?? and am i the only one that is still on liquids for 10 more days then the pureed stage for 10 days. which means i won't eat solid food for almost 20 days is that right?? i got my surgery at nyu, hospital and they seem to really love this liquid diet. I am having a hard time drinking the two shakes a day. I am not hungry at all but mostly because i am afraid to drink anything. All this talk about band opening and stuff has me scared. its bad but today i had a meltdown and had to cry. I'm just looking for some answers and if you do pureed how is it going?? and what are you eating??:)

My doc said no sex for two weeks. I waited alittle bit extra, just in case! My doc also said to refrain from alcohol for a year.

You need to ask your surgeon; they are all different and he will have advice tailored to you, your situation, his experience with his patients (based on his skills etc) so do as he says.

I was told to resume sexual activity whenever I felt comfortable/ ready.

Definitely ask Dr. Fielding. He's my surgeon as well and I know that he's actually a proponent of alcohol (not sure when we get to start though).

When is your post op appointment? I had my post-op a week after surgery and was able to move onto mushies two days early, but only because they said I could after seeing me.

I know it's hard to get down the Protein shakes especially when you're not hungry. I used a spoon and it helped to get them down easier. My surgery was on 8/7 and I felt horrible until Thursday. Today I feel GREAT! It will get better!

Good luck!!

Jen

My doctor didn't bring up the subject but I did the deed 4 days after the surgery. If you feel okay and are in the mood. go for it..

I had a check up 8 days after surgery and was given the go-ahead for all "activities," but I waited until yesterday (day 17) for sex mainly because I wasn't feeling so sexy with all the black and blue marks and redness. By the time we did the deed, I had gone a good three days without any soreness so I had absolutely no problems with any position or any sexual activity.

As for drinking, haven't done it yet, but boy am I craving a glass of red wine. My doc said wine was ok but didn't say when I could have it. Figuring I was a lightweight before surgery, I've decided to wait until I am on solid food before drinking (I am on puree right now) because I heard most people get tipsy more easily after being banded.

For purees right now I am eating baby food (I use lots of herbs and spices to make the bland chicken palatable) and mashed potatoes. I bought the premade refrigerated roasted garlic mashed potatoes from Shed's Spread. Very good and easy to measure out and nuke. For Breakfast, I puree egg beater egg whites, canned tuna and avocado. 1/4-1/2 c of that keeps me full for hours.

Thanks Jojo. I actually did the esophogram just before my post op one week after surgery. I was worried about the stuff too, but it was nothing. The taste wasn't bad and you don't have to drink a ton of it. You'll be fine!

Hi, Jojo! I go to Dr. Ren (Dr. Fielding's partner and wife -- though my surgery was in MX with Dr. Rumbaut) and they are OK with alcohol in moderation. Definitely check with them on timing though.

The shakes are pretty gross -- I hated them, so I got Isopure Protein drinks (taste/look like Gatoraid) from GNC, which was SO much better (42 grams of Protein, zero carbs). That did the trick.

As for good mushies, you can still have everything you had during liquids (Soups really carried me through liquids & mushies), and other things I enjoyed were mashed potatoes, refried Beans with cheese, pureed turkey chili, cottage cheese, and yogurt.

Best wishes for your success!

Catherine

I really hope that my post about my infection did not get you totally down, I am shocked that i even got one. I think I am a strange individual case. My doctor didn't stitch my incision together (top layer) but glued it wich I wonder is part of the problem?

My doctor had us on a liquid diet for 2 wks post-op and 2 wks mushie food diet wich is 28 days. Sounds like yours is a little more lenient.

As for the main subject I think the other gals are right,,, do it when you are comfortable. I don't think there's anything wrong with making them wait. When it happens then they will appreciate it more ;)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
