September 2009 Band Date

Goldenearrings -The Doctor approved you for surgery. That means you've passed the tests and are a good candidate for LAGB. I've had sudden health episodes that are scary -asthma, sudden intense pain from my spinal disease...I think that since you've made it to this point in your weight loss surgery efforts, to stay on track, and continue with your goals. This surgery is a major event, and I expect my emotions to be all over the place. I also know from reading posts that doubts about surgery are part of the process.

I sure hope the Dr. can help you. I'm sorry to read about your attack. Give yourself time, don't retreat, but rest and think about the health benefits of LAGB.

Anita

I find that sooo strange, that they would give those huge pain pills. Especially since they made me switch to chewable vitamins because of their size.

Yeah, I think the deal is there is not much restriction there yet? I have no prob with the big pills so far.

Amanda/McCall/Coloradomom- so glad to hear you are all doing well- other than the soreness and gas pain! I hope you continue to feel better each day! I am curious as to which band each of you received- the Lapband AP or the Realize?

My surgery is next Wednesday and I started the liquid diet yesterday. Not enjoying it so far- woke up with a headache that hasn't gone away yet. But I am still excited to make it to next week!

You did very well with your pre-surgery weightloss, you are off to a good start! I just started mine, I hope I do as well as you did:thumbup:

Okay, nix that. Just took another pill and felt like I was going to throw up. Def. stuck in there for a while. Uncool! Back to chopping up the Vicodin....

I got the Lapband AP. I think it has to do with which company your surgeon is affiliated with? Mine only does Lapband.

Good luck with your liquid diet. Is it mostly Protein Shakes? It will be over soon!

coloradomom, your abdomen looks great after the surgery! I don't see where you need to lose weight. that tummy looks pretty flat!!! I am lucky I got the one incision surgery, wasn't expecting it. Right before the surgery my Dr. told me about it. I havent had very much of the gas pain, so I think he must have taken most of it out after the surgery. Anyway, like I said before, all that worrying for nothing. It truly was a breeze!!

Oh trust me I have plenty to lose! That pic is a little deceiving because it is head on, not the side view, and also most of my weight is in my thighs/hips (conveniently cropped out of the pic)

I was in a car accident a while ago and had a bunch of little scars on my tummy from small pieces of glass that landed there....they are all pretty much faded into nothing, and I expect the same will happen with these new scars.

I agree, all things considered, the surgery was a breeze!

Thanks so much for all of the good info. I hope all of the bandsters do well, and can cope. Will visit the doc tomorrow, but not real optimistic now. The gas pains, issues around swallowing, etc have pretty much scared me off. I appreciate the responses tho.

I am swallowing alot better today and the gas is getting better every minute of the day. I wouldn't let that scare you off. I believe it is all worth it in the end. Take care. Don't let us scare you off.

I just received a call about my pre-surgery testing, which I knew would probably not be good news! I need to go back in and have my lungs looked at again. A nodule was seen and needs to be investigated further with a scan.

I really want to keep my surgery date!

I'm curious to know who has what band, too. Dr. Sasse's book has some information about the two bands, and how two companies now will speed up the competition.

I got the giant pills, not the liquid. I was chopping them in half, but this morning tried a whole pill and had no problem swallowing.

Wow I wish they would have given me the pills because that liquid stuff is nasty. LOL:frown:

I had my surgery yesterday and was released from the hospital today around 10 am. It felt like a life time... I could not wait to get home and unhooked from all the machines. I am feeling pretty good... sore but no gas pain, just incision pain. I have been moving around a lot, but am not able to eat much. Everytime I try something that isn't Water I feel like I might throw up. I am taking loritab liquid... it tastes horrible. I had the most amazing experience at St John Hospital and with my surgeon Dr. Katz. I am very pleased. I am now heading back to bad. Glad to hear everyone is doing okay. Keep up the healing all and for those yet to be banded, keep up the good pre-op work!

I didn't think you are to eat anything the day after the surgery but liquids?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
