7-Day Pre-Op Diet, should this be longer?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm scheduled for surgery 8/10, I'm told to start the pre-op liquid diet on 8/3. I've notice that many individuals are on 2-3 week liquid diets prior to surgery.

Is this unusual? Have others also done a 1-week liquid diet pre-op?

i only did 10 days...some do none so don't be surprised. just stick to it for those 7 days and you'll do great!

Everyone's pre-op instructions are different (including no instructions at all). I was supposed to do a 2 week preop and it ended up being actually 3 weeks. I felt that was good for me because it really got me ready and into the mindset, especially for the post op diet. If you're doctor likes 7 days, then just do that, and I'm sure you'll be just fine!

I started mine today and it's only 7 days. I have my surgery (hopefully) on 7/28.

Well everyone's diet is different. My surgery is scheduled for the 29th of July and I don't have a pre-op diet besides just the day before. So every doctor is different on the way they handle things. I think it also depends on how much overweight you are. Like if your BMI is 70 verses someone's BMI that is 40 then obviously the person with the 70 is probably going to do more than the person with the 40. Good luck with you diet and your surgery

Hello!

Thanks so very much for all of your responses; they have really aided in me having a better understanding that 7 days isn't odd.

Thanks!!!

Hi, Im having the surgery the same day as you, I also live in California, and I'm the same age... I'm really scared & I guess it was just comforting for me to see someone else is going to be doing the exact same thing in a very similar situation as I am. Can I ask- are you scared?

I'm on day 7 of 14 days for my shakes. My surgery is July 31/09.

I was given the Meditrim Shakes. I picked chocolate and it is very good.

Good luck to you

Sheri

My people want me on at least 3 weeks of pre-op diet of shakes, if not more. How long can a person reasonably go before it starts to get ridiculous? I didn't see a big list of Vitamins on those pre-op shakes and I'm a tad concerned about nutritional deficiency.

I have to do a 2 week diet but it isn't liquid. It is only Low Carb. I still bought some shakes for Breakfast and lunch though... I can't wait for next week.... LOL

As many have said, each doc is different - it's a preference. I know my doc based i on BMI and since my BMI was "only" 37, I only had to do a 3-day preop diet versus some in my class that had to do it for 4 weeks because of much much much higher BMIs.

One of the main goals of pre-op is to basically shrink your liver so that it doesn't get in the way during surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
