OK, Who has an AUGUST surgery date??!!

Recommended Posts

Just got the call yesterday. All approved for an 8/18 surgery. I go on 8/10...that's this Monday for my pre-op lab work. I'm pretty scared about the blood gas draw. I am a hard stick for normal blood work so this seems to be what I'm most worried about so far. Didn't have any time to have the "last supper" before starting liquids last night. I'm kind of sad though, my buddy system partner had some paperwork problems so instead of having my buddy there to go through it with me..I guess I'm going first. So here I go, diving in with both feet. Having lost almost 50 in the last 6 months, I'm sure the next hurdle will go just fine. Ahhhh! I just can't believe it's almost here!!!

Ha ha! You'll be fine! The pre-op diet isn't as bad as you think. I was really apprehensive about it, but I'm on my fifth day and I think I could deal with this for another month if I had to. I did the same thing as you before my pre-op diet, I ate candy and Chinese food and everything in between to have my last hurrah. Hope the shrink helps you, but try not to come out of any of this feeling like you are somehow a bad person because you don't have control over what you are putting in your mouth. You are not alone in that struggle.

Thank you for the kind words of encouragment. It is wonderful to know that I'm not the only one in this struggle. That's what makes this website so awesome. The shrink I have is pretty cool. She's who I had my consult with before my insurance gave final approval for surgery. She doesn't seem to be judgemental at all but told me she thought she could help me get through the hard times I'll face. I need all the help I can get. I certainly don't need someone laying a guilt trip on me. I do that just fine all by myself. If things turn in that direction, I'll find someone else. Good luck to you on your upcoming surgery. We have a lot to look forward to, huh? :scared2:

Don't worry about the ABG draw. It isn't as bad as you think. They numbed the area where they stuck me so maybe your lab will do that for you too. The needle is super tiny. Drink alot of fluids, especially Water, starting the day before you go. The more hydrated you are the easier it is to draw blood.

I'm getting mine tomorrow...August 8th. Thankfully my whole process was super quick. I had my first consult with the surgeon in the beginning of July.

I am pathetic - I am cheating almost everyday on the pre-op diet.... I think it is psychological - because I can I will.... how will I go post-op???? OMG OMG OMG

I am right with you. It's like I wrote your post. I am premenstral as well so that is not helping. Surgery Monday. So nervous. i lost 8 pounds, but is it enough?

Hey girls - i too have not been so great with the pre-op diet, glad to know I'm not alone. I had a 7 day liquid, I was good the first 2 days then I ate one meal days 3, 4, 5 and today so far so good...tomorrow I have to do Clear Liquids, day before surgery. Hope I didn't mess anything up. Very disappointed in my lack of self control

Hello August Banders

My name is Ed, and I am a music teacher in NY. My surgery was August 4th 2009. I did almost all liquids for 8 days with one cheat in NYC for brunch. I also went to the gym every day and did 30 mins on the elliptical. I lost 14lbs before the surgery. Doing two weeks of liquids now, and I am still trying to get rid of the gas. I dont go back to teach until aug 30 when we go to a music camp. A woman I worked with got banded on a Thursday and came back on Monday.

Good Luck

Anyone here who got banded had numb spots on their stomachs? I had my surgery Wednesday, today is Sunday, and on my left side (not my port side) in the crease where my belly folds (where I wear my pants) it is numb. Then just some random lil spots on my belly that feel numb to the touch too. Feels weird.

Anyone else have this?

Thanks for the advice. That's good to now. I'm working on the liquids. I'll ask about the numbing stuff. That would certainly help. This site is so awesome...everyone being willing to share their experience and insight.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
