Am I damaging my esophogus?

Recommended Posts

By all the coughing I am doing at night lately-- And beyond that, am I putting my band at risk for all my PB-ing and coughing? I am sure I am a bit too tight, but I don't want to be a wuss about it and get an unfill, unless I am sure I am not doing everything right myself. I try to stop eating by 6PM and I do do that most every night. But I do slip once in a while and have a bit to eat at maybe 8PM. So I think it is my fault for all the coughing that keeps me up all night. I really would like someone elses take on this--Thank you.

Go get a slight unfill. It is not good for your band. Your not being a wuss for getting a slight unfill. It is being smart.

Coughing at night like that is a definite symptom that your band is too tight. You can't change that fact by yourself! Go to the doc and ask for a small unfill, perhaps no more than .5cc. It could/should make a huge difference. You need your rest.

Well, I took everyone's advice and went in to get an unfill--thanks all for responding. I feel better already.

Here's the thing though--It was my 2nd consecutive unfill, and my Doc said he wanted me to have an upper G. I. to see if the band has slipped. If it slipped, does that mean I will have to take the band out?????

I confess I don't know a whole lot about this, just what someone reported on another forum. Her band had slipped. her doctor put her on a liquid diet for 2 (or possibly 3, I can't remember) weeks. Her band moved back into place. That's the only person I've ever heard actually talk about some treatment for a slipped band.

Sometimes if the band is left unfilled for a few weeks and they put you on a liquid diet, the band will go back to the right position.

Any time you have these night time problems, get into your doctor immediately. It's dangerous! I revised to a sleeve because the band damaged my esophagus from throwing up in my sleep.< /p>

Okay, I need help. I just had a fill on Wednesday, my third and I think I am too tight. I have 7.5 in a 9 realize band. I cannot sleep lying down, I have to elevate the head of my bed or I wake up in the night throwing up in my mouth. I took my meds on Wednesday after my fill, and i think one of them stuck in the opening for the band. I felt like i was choking for 2 days. I called my dr. today, who is in surgery, but will work me in tomorrow afternoon. This is no life. I want to lose weight, but I can't throw up everytime I eat. i thought the band was going to let me forget about food, not be afraid of it. I thought I was a little tight before this fill on Wednesday, but I wanted to lose faster, so I got another one. I am thinking of asking to go back about 2 ccs to 5.5. My diabetes is under control without any meds now and that was one of my main goals. Should I ask for that much of an unfill? Or, is this to be expected when you have restriction. Yesterday, I had one strip of bacon and one chicken tender all day. I cannot get down my B/P medicine either. Part of me says to have it all removed, but I threw out all of my bigger clothes. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Let the doctor be the judge of how much to remove. If you were able to eat okay where you were before this last fill, then that's probably where you need to be.

When you throw up, things swell up inside. People are supposed to go on liquids for 24 hours after an episode

of throwing up.

It's possible that you are eating too fast, taking too big of bites and not chewing enough. You need to chew your food until it's liquid in your mouth. They say to take a bite the size of a pencil eraser.

The band can help you forget about food, with the right fill. When you have the right fill, chew correctly, take small bites and wait in between bites, you will get full on

a small amount of food and stay full for several hours. You will be full enough that thinking of food doesn't even sound appetizing.

Thanks for the response. I saw my Dr. yesterday and he removed 1 cc and said hopefully this will be my sweet spot. He will not put in more than .5cc each fill from now on. I am at 6.5 now. And, I feel much, much better. I can eat, but don't need to. I can get my meds down, so all is well. I lost 6 lbs. last week, according to his scale. He did say that I was too tight if I had to sit up to sleep and couldn't get my meds down. It takes eight weeks to get a fill, so I never want to get an unfill, but I am glad I did this time. I do chew very, very well, small, small bites and I don't drink with my meals. After a week of hell, I am back to a good spot now. Let's hope it stays that way. :smile2:

I am having all the same symptoms. First I had a cold and coughed forever and now allergies are so bad the drainage kkeps my band stopped. I fianally caved in and called my doctor. I go today and scared that she will have bad news. But I know now that I should have not waited this long (aprox 3 months). Amazing what excuses we will tell ourselves about the coughing at night and not eating solids.

Wish me luck that all I have is a tight band and only a little will need to come out and not all of it.

HolleyHobby, I will say a prayer for you. Mine had only been a week, but I could not have stood it for 3 months. I feel so much better now. My allergies cause me fits, too and while I want to lose the most weight I can as quick as I can, what I was doing was not living. I felt so bad they could have taken it all out and I wouldn't care. he only took out 1 cc and it is so much better. I can eat, take my meds and sleep. Hopefully, you just need a small unfill. Let us know what happens.

I have been banded since nov 08, port revision in feb/08. I have PB since I had the band, had to be completely unfilled and still throw up. Finally had a gastroscope yesterday and found out there is no pouch and band is near my esophagus. I have to go for a barium swallow on wed and then back to mu surgeon. When you think there is something wrong-SEE YOUR DR. There likely is and needs to be addressed.

That is perfect advise. Throwing up frequently is not normal.Throwing up in the middle of the night, coughing and choking is definitely a sign of problem and one needs to get to the doctor.

Yes, the esophagus is being damaged.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
