Hematoma near port site?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I was banded on 2/11/09 and have had really no complications since. I've been able to swallow and drink and have not vomited at all.

Today I went in for my first fill and the doctor said he felt a hematoma near the port site. I'm a tiny bit bruised that is visible on the skin, but otherwise hardly any swelling and just a little sore. It definitely hurt when he was kneading his fingers around to feel it. Then he put a fill of 4 cc in and I was sent on my way. It wasn't the surgeon who did the fill, but another doctor that works in his office and was the one who also did my manometry test..He didn't seem too concerned with the hematoma, but should I be?

Should i call the office and make sure the surgeon knows? I didn't see him today. Is this risky? Since the fill i've just been on liquids and taking them fine. Maybe a little more sore than usual since he was pushing hard around the port...

Would definitely love some input here. Thanks!

I was banded on 31st Jan and have a haematoma just above my port. I queried it and was told by the nurse it would "get absorbed by the body in time". I even sent photos to my surgeon who said, although unusual, he wasn't worried about it.

Yesterday I had my first fill. A different consultant did the fill and examined the haematoma, making sure it wasn't a hernia. He said he wasn't concerned and that, as the nurse had said, it would be reabsorbed by the body - in time.

I will keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Here is a pic of my lump!

hmm...that is very comforting. I'm sure i'll get the same response. Mine doesn't even stick out from the skin..I see some slight bruising but you have to look close. No other symptoms except some soreness.

I always worry about stuff like this and when i search the internet it really scares me more. That's why i needed to ask on here. I'm a nurse and I sometimes see hematomas but usually in the groin area or on the head. The huge huge hematomas have to get evacuated, but you definitely KNOW there is a hematoma there. There are all sorts of pretty colors around the area and it swells big. I definitely don't have those symptoms.

I didn't know it was there before today and I was losing weight, taking liquids and purees just fine, so i'll just keep doing what i was doing. But I will post what my doctor says.

I wouldn't stress about it at all, especially since a doctor who did the fill has already seen it, diagnosed it and said it is nothing to worry about.

My son had a really bad one once after an injury sliding across a linoleum floor into the corner of a coffee table as a small child. It caused a permanent little dimple on his cheek (but placement was perfect in that it looks like a regular dimple). It was no big deal at all, the doctor really couldn't do anything for it and it dissapeared on its own.

I was banded on Jan 20 and also had a hematoma. Mine was big. I went for my first fill and they couldnt get to the port because of it. At that time they took 54cc's of blood from it. I went back the next week to try again for a fill. They took another 43 cc's of blood out of it. Seems to be all gone now. The also told me the body would absorb it back....It had been more than 6 weeks and nothing. It also hurt pretty bad when I sat or wore jeans. If I were you I would ask them if they could drain it. Its not painful and didnt take very long...

Do you mind me asking what happened? Did it end up getting reabsorbed like they said it would? I was banded on 05/10 and I have the sane thing... And was told the same information. If so did it go away a little at a time? I am really worried because it is very uncomfortable, and looks awful!

I was banded on 4/15 and had a hematoma and internal bleeding at the port site too. I'm still bruised from it, but when my surgeon attempted to drain it nothing came out. The port itself sticks way out on me like a tumor sort of.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
