Urrrgh... Terrible ER/Slippage Day

Recommended Posts

I went in for my first fill December 1st and got 4cc's.... right off the bat. I had to go in two days later and get 1 taken out. However, last night I started sour stomach symptoms, throwing up, the "trots", and pain in my chest after probably overdoing it while cleaning the heck out of my house. I was worried my band had slipped because on another thread, my symptoms were that of slippage. So, I called the docs office but my surgeon wasn't on call. A co-worker of his was and told me to go to the ER to get an unfill... but I thought it would be better to totally unfill me, and let me recouperate. Nope. I got there, got stuck on fluids as I hadn't had anything stay down in more than 24 hours and was barfing for 18 hours after eating cottage cheese, cheese chunks. It was terrible. They gave zofran for nausea, and the doc came in and did a terribly rough and uncomfortable unfill... yanked the needle out, shoved it in sideways, took forever.... etc. It was terrible. I still have a pain in my chest near my collar bone and I ache like bad where the band would be, but never felt like this before, even after surgery.

Anyone else have slippage with sour stomach symptoms? I am so belchy still... after removal... and I am pissed they didn't do a barium swallow to check... and even more so that they didn't do a complete unfill... GARH! Anyone help?

If you had diarrhoea as well as vomiting are you sure you werent actually sick with a bug?

I've not really heard of the band causing lower intestinal symptoms.

I hope you feel a lot better soon.

no fever, no chills, nothing in my labs... I had the runs from not having anything but little bits come and go through the stoma... kind of like post surgery stuff...

I still feel like crap, all achy and sore... but I hope I survive 'til Monday when I can talk to my doctor... this sure doesn't feel normal.

Wow, so sorry to hear this. And 4cc on a first fill seems very aggressive. Insist that your doctor do a barium swallow test to make sure everything is okay. Why take a chance.

Everyone I talked to thought 4cc's was really agressive, seeing as I have about 20 to lose until MY goal weight. He still wants another 20 lbs on top of that. I think what bothered him and why it was so aggressive was because I admitted I could eat bread... I've not had problems with it yet, and I'm sure that concerned him... but, I'm back to taking it easy. liquids and whatnot are not fun, but I'm just tired of throwing up...

Hi guys, wanted to let you know what happened today at the doctors. He was incredibly puzzled that I would still be in pain after only 2cc's left in my band, so he removed it all out, then checked his notes. There was a bit of dead silence for a moment as he gathered his thoughts. He said that he was just talking about the last 10cc band patient he had done, it was an accident as he's mainstreaming all surgeries to the large 14cc band, but they left it in anyway... guess who got that band? ME!! So, 4cc's was indeed WAY too aggressive of a fill for me, he said more like 1.5cc's is what should be considered aggressive for a 10cc band fill... and we get to start all over Monday, with "smaller" fills... *sigh* All this poking around... yuck. At least I know food is moving through now, I felt it slop to the pit of my stomach once I stood up and moved a bit... so that was what caused the terrible sour stomach garbage...

My God. That is the craziest thing I have heard. Well at least the guy caught it... My God. Here's hoping your stomach recovers quickly from that...

I know from here on out that it's okay to be vocal and question things. Initally he was going to put some restriction in my band at surgery, but decided against it... So, when I went in for a fill I figured 4cc's is what I needed since he didn't fill me and that HE was the surgeon... I should trust him.

I also learned to trust my guts... no pun intended.

Never assume anything... I learned my lessons...

Snowwhite: How much did you loose before you got the band? I saw that you said you have 20 lbs to go?

Sorry you had to go through that! It's unfortunately a painful reminder that docs are human too. Good luck with your refill(s).

WOW! So sorry you had to go through that.

Thanks for sharing because these are good things to know about and be aware of. I am scheduled to be banded on 12/31. But I had a question. you said the sour stomach and diarrhea was caused from what again? If you weren't able to eat what was souring your tummy? This way I know different things that may happen with the band.

thanks,

Cheryl

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
