Hi All.

I'm new here - just beginning my liquid diet to loose 15 lbs before my surgery in Feb. I've pointedly asked my surgeon what are the realistic weight loss number for those over 50. And honestly she was very evasive.

I'd like to loose 100+ pounds. Is this possible? How is everyone else doing?

Well.. just past my 1-year Bandiversary and have lost 69 pounds! Yah! It can definitely work after 50, but it is JUST A TOOL.. You have to commit to it! Good luck and God Bless!

I'm 56. October 08 I had lab band surgery. I lost nearly 100 pounds that year by pre-surgery dieting and the 6 weeks soft diet that followed. I was told I could eat anything I wanted by my lap band doc after that 6 weeks right in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas eating. I wondered why I wasn't feeling the lap band working. It took until February with 100 mile trips to the lap band doctors to get fills every 2 weeks before I could feel the band was beginning to tighten. I wasn't loosing very much if anything. I have been going up and down 10 pounds but have remained the same in weight even though my band is tight enough now. The lap band doc told me to stop snacking, stay away from soft foods and only eat 3 meals a day and follow the South Beach Diet. That the lap band is a tool. Well it definately is not the solution. If I could diet, I wouldn't have needed the lap band! I should have gone gastric by-pass and I am very unhappy with my recent results. I need to loose 100 pounds more. I am able to do more this year and feel healthier but it was do to the pre-surgery weight loss.

you guys are quite an impressive group!

I was wondering if any of your surgeries were complicated due to scars from previous surgeries

(c-sections, gallbladder, etc.)?

I had a c-section, laproscopy incisions around my navel for ovary camera scans and gall bladder laproscopy done. The 3 small incisions and the 3 inch center cut to put the lap band in didn`t interfere with any of those.

I too, was at a standstill for about 3 months until I got the right fill. Don't give up on it yet.. It is a tool.. but it works! You have done wonderfully already! Keep up the good work!

Darling you have done very well - it take time to lose the weight we didn't put it on over night and they banded our tummies and not our heads and that's where the main problem lies imho...

I will be physically full but that doesn't stop me from wanting to eat more - being bored - omw that's my biggest problem - I want to snack - 3 meals (low fat - sf and limited carbs/starches) and 2 healthy snack - that's healthy eating and thats what we have to do to lose the weight - ya restriction helps - but as we all know - slider foods can be our down fall..

This isn't a diet - it's about a healthy lifetime lifestyle change in our eating - our eating normal is what got us fat in the 1st place - so we need to understand that...

I don't care what kind of WLS you have all of them are only tools - even bypass pple gain their weight back too...

I feeling much better about the lapband this week. I saw a different doctor this month and he congratulated me about reaching the 100 pounds off mark. I have lost 1/3 my weight in a year and no matter how I did it, I should be proud of myself. I am down 2 or 3 sizes. 2 shoe sizes at least. I seem to be loosing inches at this time and not too much weight. I have 100 pounds to go to reach the goal I set for myself though but the doctor assured me that I would be in a size 12 in 2 years. I guess I better adjust my leaping frog at the bottom of this comment for the 100 pounds. Physically I feel 100% better than last year when they gave me a year to live with all my problems that weight brought on.

Hi Fabulous Fifties,

Not banded yet but have a question. How soon were you able to get off your blood pressure meds? Anyone able to get off their thyroid meds for hypothyroidism?

I was on 2 bp meds - I still take one - I don't know about the thryroid meds - I don't know that obesity is linked to thyroid problems other than having it can make you gain weight but once that weight is loss - will your thryorid go back to normal??

Even skinny pple have to take bp meds - but loosing the weight does help some get off them altogether..

I got off my blood pressure meds of 10 yrs at only 1 week post op. I was thrilled and that there made the surgery worthwhile for me. It has remained normal ever since too.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
