Tired of the med crushing.

Recommended Posts

My nurse insists that it's okay for me to take my meds, without crushing any of them. Even the day after surgery. I was SO scared, cause a couple are fairly big. I guess one is the size of an M&M and the other two are big capsules. We went over and over it. I MAY have been getting on her nerves a little bit. :)

I also checked with my pharmacist before the surgery. She said that it may be possible to have some compounded at a special pharmacy. I guess I don't have to go through that, since the nurse really thinks I'll be okay. I'm not totally convinced. How come I can swallow these big pills, but I can't have mashed potatoes??? I saw my shrink the other day and just asked her to prescribe the smallest pill size possible, so that I didn't have to worry about them getting stuck. I'll be popping little pills all day. Hopefully it'll be okay.

I can't wait for some idiot to say something about WLS being the "easy" way out. :tongue2:

Hi Ginny! I'm right there with you on that. I've heard people make those comments even before I had WLS however they didn't know I wasn't having the surgery lol. It's definately not the easy way out. I work harder now than I ever have but i'm so glad I did it :blushing: !!

I decided with the pills (starting yesterday) that I would just take them UNCRUSHED. I've had no problems with it so far. I'll never forget ,the very first day that I crushed my Effexor meds (the generic) ,I felt so nauseous and on edge. I hated it. Never again lol.

Thanks for your reply :sleep2: !!

I did liquids for a couple of weeks (I only do some over the counter stuff). As soon asw I was full diet, I quit the liquids, and have had no problems with pills (Tylenol, benedryl, etc).

Hi Steve,

I finally just decided that yesterday I would start taking them normally. I've had no problems ,so far.

I am allowed to take pills that are no bigger than an M&M - and they started me on them while I was in the hospital!

I had an issue with Prilosec, I took it for my heartburn and because it was time release, of course I did not crush. I ended up with an ulcer on my esophagus because it was apparently just sitting in my pouch causing erosion (i.e. not going down the chute, so to speak). So, I would caution those taking certain meds that might cause erosion.

It sucks, because I was taking the prilosec to help my acid reflux but actually made it worse:(

I was told I could swallow my thyroid pill whole, but I had to take chewable vitamins. If needed, I could take liquid Tyleno for pain relief.

This is really my only complaint so far and I'm six days post -op. I asked about my meds and was told they would prescribe them in liquids. After surgery, was sent home with instructions to crush all of them. The Wellbutrin tasted so bad, I almost gagged. I called the doctor's office to ask if they could call in a liquid version. They said yes, but didn't call me back. I called the pharmacy, who stated that they don't have a liquid form of wellbutrin. I kept crushing them. Then my mom pointed out that is says "don't crush" on the bottle. I called the doctor's office back and they said, oh don't crush the Wellbutrin if it's SR (after three days of crushing). They told me I could try and take it but it might get stuck. I've been taking them ever since with no problems.... I was scared too, but it went down fine.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
