Unable to eat or drink band got too tight.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded on August 25th and was feeling great up until about 2 weeks ago. I started being able to eat and drink less and less. I just thought maybe I iritated my stomach (which I still think I did) then the acid reflux started and I couldn't sleep without throwing up it was awful. Finally I went to get some of the Fluid taken out of my band. I had 2 CC in a 4 CC band. My Dr. took out 1 CC and I felt instantly better. I am not sure why it did this, maybe because ate something to iritate my stomach and therefore my band but basically nothing was getting through.

I hope I still continue to lose weight even with 1cc taken out. If not I will rest my stomach for the next couple weeks and get the other cc put back in.

I just thought I would share that experince just in case anyone else was feeling the same way. My suggestion don't wait until your kidneys hurt to go get an unfill like I did.

Thanks and good luck!

This has happened to me. I was sick for 3 months with sinus issues and the ENT doc told me I had acid reflux and that the reflux was causing sinus issues. Now, after a few weeks, I can't keep anything down. I can barely drink and can only eat maybe 2 bites and then I feel as if it's going to come back up (and usually does). I'm going to the doc on Wednesday.:)

Hello. What happened to your kidneys due to the band being too tight? Why did they hurt? Reason Im asking is I think my band is too tight. I just got a fill two weeks ago and I can not eat more than two bites without PBing. Of anything!! And it is soo hard to swallow.. even fluids sometimes. And then my kidney started hurting really bad. I actually have a pelvic kidney..(its actually in my lower abdomen).. and its actually the same side as my port (where he went in ). I didnt put the two together until I read your thread. Please let me know! Thanks!

My kidneys started to hurt because I couldn't drink not even Water. I would take a sip and I would get a stabbing main in my chest, so I got to be even scared to try. I was so weak and dehydrated. When my Dr. took some out I drank a cup of Water and felt instantly better.

I would have some of your Fluid removed. Did you feel sick before the fill? I have read that it takes some time to get the sweet spot on the fills. I think I could take a 1/2 cc more but I am going to give my stomach a rest for a couple weeks first.

Good luck I suggest you go and see the Dr. soon before you get any sicker.

Thanks for getting back to me! I felt absolutley fine before this fill. My first fill was good. I could eat well, just not bread. And I had a feeling of "fullness" when I ate. Now with this second fill... its been awful. Ill pb after two bites..but of course still be left hungry. Im afraid to eat/drink because even drinking things hurt sometimes. I called my doc last friday and told them what was going on and they told me to SIP warm Water and see if it went down. I told them it would go down but I literally heard it going down and felt it. And the nurse just said oh thats ok. As long as it went down. And toldme I will just have to train my brain to be satisfied with 2 bites. And I'm thinking... I thought the purpose of the band was to limit the amount of food it took for you to be full? Not to train your brain and stay hungry. So anyway, i have went this week..and nothing has changed. I am going to have to call on Monday and say hey I need an unfil. The nurse just made me feel like I was requesting it prematurely since it had only been a week since my fill...now its been two and nothings changed. Somethings gotta give!

Hi again Banded Butterfly, I tried the warm Water thing too. Unless they are HUGE bites that nurses rational is stupid. You shouldn't feel/hurt bites of food and Water. My Dr. Told me to do nexium and a liquid diet for 15 days after 3 days of trying this and throwing up all night I said enough. I bet if they even take 1/2 of what they put in you will feel better.

I think they should take what the patient says more than what they "think". Good luck I will be thinking about you. :rolleyes2:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
