Recommended Posts

Geez, you have been on a liquid diet for a long time. I am having surgery tomorrow a.m. and was instructed to go to liquids starting this morning!! I am going to try and go to bed early so I don't hear my tummy grumbling much longer. Good for you that you have been such a good patient and I think you've been through the tough part already.......Getting used to a liquid diet!! Good luck on the 24th!!

Well - I had my surgery on Nov. 4. It is now Nov. 7 and I am recovering well. I had a couple of rough days from my back problems after surgery. I had little problem with pain from the Lap Band Surgery once I was in my room after the recovery room. Most of my pain was from my cronic back problem. They were wonderful to me in the hospital trying to help me feel comfortable from back pain. The pain I felt from the surgery was very minor compared to my back pain. I had to stop all my back pain meds a few days before the Lap Band surgery. Today I finally got my back pain under control. I went for two walks today each of about 1/2 mile. It was easy to do. I have been relatively active today. I took 1 nap in the afternoon. I am thankful so far for this procedures. I feel about 75% today. I expect to feel about 90% tomorrow if things continue as they have. I am glad I have had this procedure and fully expect it to be very successful as a weight loss tool. I am looking forward to continued improving health. I am following my Drs. orders to the letter. I imagine, if I didn't i might have complications. So I choose to be perfect through the 5 stages of relearning how to eat. This is also necessary for the protection of my new stomach pouch. I believe I have a great dr. who did a good job on my surgery, therefore due to that an the fact that I am doing my part, I fully expect to have no complications. I will be very healthy and much more active then I have been for many years. I am here to encourage you to have the procedure done. I would do it again tomorrow. I have a desire to be thin and healthy for my God, my spouse and my children. I will let you know how things go.

Hip! Hip! Hooray!

I have my surgery the 24th and sounds like we are similar with the back problems. I have quit the anti-inflammatories, but he didn't tell me to stop any other meds. Did you stop pain pills? I would die!

Hello to all you lapbanders!! I will join your ranks tomorrow and I must say I don't know whether I'm more excited or nervous. I will let you know my thoughts/feelings and maybe even can post a few tips relating to my experience next week. It's so nice to have a place to chat about my own experience and it's been very helpful to just "lurk" and learn from many of your posts. Onward and upward!!!!

The best wishes were for you!! This pre-op diet is getting the best of me!! Not really. I get to have some chicken and turkey with my o fat 0 sugar Protein drinks!!!

I am scheduled to be banded on the 26th, by Dr. Ortiz at the OCC. It's hard to believe this is actually going to happen, two weeks from today. I haven't had any time to really let it sink in because I've had a lot of pre-op weight to lose (due to my BMI) and I've been working hard to lose that weight, for fear that my surgery date might get moved if I don't lose it. I have 5.5 pounds to go, but my scale hasn't budged since Monday  I get discouraged really easily when I don't see progress, especially when on an 800 calorie diet that's really taxing every resource I have. Two shakes and a lean cuisine, and some green veggies (which help minimally). I'm hungry all the time!

I need some encouragement. I'm worried about whether I'll meet my pre-op weight goal in time, and because of that I haven't been able to mentally prepare myself for the huge life change that is about to occur. It all seems to be going so fast, but when I made my decision, I knew this was right for me, that with the amount of weight I have to lose, that this is the only option that I feel is going to achieve substantial results. I'm nervous though, and am a baby when it comes to pain, operations, needles, etc. (I've never had surgery). Ah, my head seems like it's going a mile a minute sometimes with this whole process!

-Vangirl

I can usually lose 5 pounds quickly by eating only meat, poultry, and eggs, nothing else. And lots of Water. I bet it will work for you too!!

Hi all,

I hope it's not too late to join this thread. I had my surgery a week ago tomorrow and wanted to find a group to converse with about common experiences. I'm doing great, though I still have some noticeable pain around the incisions (primarily where the port is) and still a little gas pain, but all in all, I'm thrilled.

I get to move from liquids to mushy food tomorrow which will be a nice change. Including the pre-op diet for two weeks and the week since surgery, I've lost about 16 pounds. I still find myself hungry at times but I understand that will get better after the 1st fill, which I have scheduled for December 4th. I'm so excited for those of you taking the plunge this week and next. I've ready lots of your posts and know how excited everybody is. This is going to be the best ride of our lives! Thanks for all the great advice and feedback I've already gotten from you all!

My incisions are starting to itch a lot, which I'm sure is an excellent sign that they are healing! Keep up the great positive spirits!

Mine was done at Surgical Specialty Hospital at Maryland and 19th Avenue, about 1/2 a mile from where you will be. My insurance recommended overnight, but it was left up to me, so I chose to go home. My surgery started at 2:30, I walked from recovery to my room at 4:30 and I was discharged at 7 pm and home to Peoria by 8 pm. I much preferred to sleep in my own bed.

I'm still taking pain meds occasionally at night since I've gone back to work and found a few new soreness areas. I could do without them with no problem, but it's here and it makes it a little easier, so I've gone for it. Make sure you go to the store and have everything you need before you have surgery - i.e. lots to drink, gas x, etc. I did sugar free popsicles, Jello, crystal lite, g2 gatorade, chicken broth for the first 2 days, and then regular liquids - Protein Shakes, sugar free pudding, jello, skim milk, applesauce through last night. Today I get to move on to mushy food. Make sure you walk, walk, walk, and take the gas-x strips on your tongue to keep the gas pains from getting too bad starting immediately after surgery.

Glad to have found a buddy!

You are going to do great!

November 12th here. I am so excited/nervous I could just....

This emotional rollercoaster has got to settle down. I am reading everything I can get my hands on and still I feel like I need/want more info, more testimonies, more ideas of how to avoid problems. I wonder if I will ever feel ready and at peace?

Hi Violet:smile2:

I was just reading the post and wanted to check in with you. I too was initiated into bandland on 11-12-08. I hope that you are doing well.

You have some of the same questions, wonderings as me so perhaps we can keep tabs on each other:smile:

I met with the surgeon, dietition and did all the pre-admit stuff yesterday. Surgery is in less than 4 days! I am so excited and nervous too.

I have been doing 2 Protein Drinks a day with one lean cuisine type meal a day. The dietition said I can have 2 lean cuisine meals a day if I like, and have an additional Protein Drink if I choose. WOW, I'm so excited that I can have a small piece of chicken and green vegetables twice a day up until the day before surgery. Isn't it strange how every pre-op diet is different and every dietition has different rules to go by.

Good luck to all on the pre-op diet.

 I was banded on November 4. I was expecting to be biting nails when i returned to the world from recovery. The pain from the surgery was very tollerable. :tongue2: Most of my pain was from a cronic back problem I have. (one reason I am on this journey) I walked around the nurses station 39 times while I was in the Hospital. 18 times is 1 mile. As a result I had none of the gas pains we hear about so much. I went home the next morning. Recovery was a non eventful. I walked 3 miles on my 5th day home from the Hospital. I have not been hungry since surgery. Eating is a learning experience for me. I started out liquids for 1 week post op then 2nd week small bites of limited mushies, 3rd week mushies small bites, waiting 30 sec between bites, with added oatmeal, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, refried beans... only about 1 cup or less total of food at each meal. I have lost a grand total, including pre-op and post-op, of 46lbs. :tt2: I feel so much better than I have for years. I hardly know that I have had surgery at this point. the incisions are not painful at all. The decision to be banded has proven to be one of the best decisiond of my life. I am excited about what the remainder of my life holds because I chose health and fitness.

Hip! Hip! Hooray! :w00t:

Sandy - that's awesome! 46 lbs already...you are doing so well!

How much of that was pre-op? I'd love to match your numbers in MY first month...I've lost a few before surgery, but am looking forward to big losses after. I'll remember the Gas-x strips - thanks for the tip!

I love to walk, so it's going to be fun getting around the Nurses' station...:tongue2:

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
