I just don't understand why the local surgeon here (Dr. Geiss)on LI just responded to my e-mail that if I have a 36.5 BMI without blood pressure or diabetes problems then I do NOT qualify for surgery?? The reputable surgeons I met with at NYU Med center think I'm a perfect candidate. Two of my Primary Care Physicians recommended surgery for me. I just can't see why they would turn me away.

Well my insurance company agrees with this guy so next step is Mexico! Perhaps the surgeon only want to take insurance patients? thanks for listening

I think it depends on the program. I have Kaiser and you have to have a BMI of 40 with no medical problems, or 35 with medical issues. Kind of sad though, because do they want you to gain weight so you can have the surgery? Not very preventative is it. Good Luck.

I was a bmi of 30 but had 25 years of Weight Watchers records showing my gains and loses. I also have high blood pressure. Of course, no insurance would cover me so I paid. Best investment I ever made.

I didn't qualify either at 200lbs and 5' 2.5" but I had it done in Tijuana March 15th and I'm so glad I did - I'm down to 162. I had them fill my band super tight so its been a tough lifestyle change but really worth it.
