I was told by another bander that it doesn't matter if you eat solids (a little) after being banded for only 2 weeks. Is this true? What could happen if you eat solids within 2 weeks of being banded?

i wouldn't go as far as solids, but purreed foods is ok at 2 weeks, and cream soups... but nothing solid. You don't want to risk your band shifting and having to get revision surgery.

is there anything else that can happen outside of band slippage?

I thought band slippage was less than 1%?

band slippage is more occurent in the first month because it's so new in your body, your body isn't used to the foriegn object and usually it's kept open for a month. It's not common, but you don't want to risk it by eating solid foods.

The healing period post-banding and the required diet is meant to give your body time to heal without causing a bunch of commotion in your stomach that could rip stitches, or tear loose forming scar tissue. Follow the diet. No reason to push it. Let your body heal.

Slippage occurs more in the beginning, so it isvital to stick to your Dr.'s post op diet instructions, the band needs to anchor in, scar tissues needs to build so it will stay in place. Eating solids too soon after surgery requires too much digestion so soon, digestion has lots of rumbling , tumblim, churnin, NOT a good envvironment for a new band to be able to set into place

It's important to stick with the doctor's rules of "no solids" for a few weeks after banding. Every time you introduce something into your belly, your stomach starts moving & wiggling around to begin the digestive process. You don't want all that movement when the band is new. The area needs to heal, the band needs to seat itself in place, etc.

One of our fellow bandsters is currently in the hospital in very serious condition. So far all I've heard is 3rd hand information, but I've heard she had her band removed due to erosion, which could have been caused from all the Ibuprofen she took. The rules say "NO STOMACH IRRITANTS, such as Ibuprofen. The rules also say, "NO SOLID FOODS FOR SEVERAL WEEKS AFTER SURGERY."

My point is to abide by all rules. Don't take unecessary chances with your band or your health. It's just not worth it.

What does your surgeon say in terms of your post-op healing diet? That's the only opinion that matters. Don't let another bandster give you permission to not follow your surgeon's instructions.

My surgeon is not conservative in terms of post-op healing phase eating...1 day liquids, then 2 weeks of mushies/purees, then 2 weeks of softs, the reintroduce solids as tolerated. However, those were MY instructions so have no bearing on what anyone else's surgeon instructs them to do. However, the instructions shouldn't come as a surprise after surgery. People should have the full set of instructions prior to undergoing surgery. Some surgeons "force" rapid loss in the beginning by ridiculously long clear liquid phases (several weeks) and if I was that patient consulting with that surgeon, that would've been one of my questions, and I would've questioned that protocol...and probably gone elsewhere to someone who had a post-op eating plan more in keeping with the general consensus...

But regardless, once you select a surgeon, you follow THEIR instructions.
