I just got my surgery date and have decided that I want to try some Protein Shakes before I really need to be drinking them so I know what I like and don't like. I'm not really into milk and milkshakes, but I am willing to try whatever. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When is your date? There are great sub-forums for each month that you might want to check out. Just choose from the Monthly groups on the menu on the main page.

I like the New whey Protein Bullets. They come in some fruity flavors and are like liquid Jello. I also like the unjury strawberry Sorbet powder in Crystal Light. Unjury also makes an Unflavored that you can "hide" in pretty much anything, and a chicken Soup flavor too. If you aren't a shake fan, these are a couple of great options!

I also like the Body for Life Advantage low carb shakes. They are less calories but have 17 grams of Protein. I too do not like milk products. The Unjury chicken Soup is good and the strawberry sorbet. I dont like the unflavored. Good Luck. You may also want to practice eating small bites and slowly.

We are a fan of Muscle Milk, Cake batter flavor. Mixes up smoothly and tastes much like a sweet milk. I love to add instant coffee grounds and ice to it, and make something like a frappucino...ymmm... I have been trying to drink at least one per day as a Meal Replacement, usually in the AM, and I have really grown to enjoy it. And it also makes me feel sooooo much better. ( I am still preop too). Good luck.

**Added since initial post**

I've been taste testing several things, since I have to do Protein drinks for 3 weeks post-surgery. I was interested in things other than milkshakes, too. Here's what I've tried:

Isopure - clear, fruity drinks 40g/Protein in a 20oz bottle, 0 sugars. I tried the Icy Orange. It wasn't bad, but the Vitamin Shoppe guy said some flavors are "more dry" than others. It did leave my tongue a bit coated, but nothing I couldn't live with. Other flavors are Passion fruit, Apple Melon, Grape Frost, Alpine Punch, Mango Peach, Blue Raspberry, pineapple Orange banana, and I think a Green Tea. **Apple Melon...smelled like Midori!! Taste was pretty good. Neither it nor the Icy Orange have very intense tastes. I think adding some appropriately flavored Crystal Light would bump the flavor up.**

ProteinBlitz by Designer whey - these are really new. Also a fruity, non-milky drink. 30g/Protein in a 20 oz bottle, 1 g sugars. I tried the Grape...I LOVED it...reminded me of a grape soda without the fizz. Also comes in Orange Mango and Punch. **Punch is YUMMY! Orange Mango was good too. Hubby nailed it when he said they all tasted like Kool-aid. And that's a good thing!**

Lean Body by Labrada - milkshakes 40g/Protein in a 17 oz serving, 0 sugars. I tried the Strawberries and Cream, which is a brand new flavor, and it was really, really good. It also comes in chocolate Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream and Bananas and Cream. **Chocolate Ice Cream was very good. Really had a melted-ice cream quality to it.**

Worldwide Pure Protein shake - comes in an aluminum can like soda. 35g/Protein in an 11 oz can, 2 g sugars. I tried the Frosty chocolate and enjoyed it. Just make sure to shake them up REALLY good. It also comes in Cookies and Cream, strawberry Cream, Vanilla Cream and banana Cream. **Strawberry Cream was pretty good. These are fairly thin, watery shakes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing sometimes.**

EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control - 17g/Protein in an 11 oz carton, 2 g carbs. I tried the Chocolate Fudge and strawberry Cream. Didn't like them one bit

Based on my research...lol...I've bought a 12-pack of the Lean Body Strawberries and Cream, and another Grape Protein Blitz, plus the rest of all the "testers" (except the EAS....down the sink they went) to get me through the first 5 days or so after surgery...which is tomorrow!!

You are wise to try some now, to find ones you like.

I agree with the Isopure - I like Icey Orange

I like the New Whey Liquid Protein (like the bullet), 3 oz. 42 g Protein, but very thick. I divide it among a couple (or more) bottles of Water to dilute it. Makes a very subtle taste (I like orange again)

ANY of the "canned" Protein Shakes are way too thick for me.

Since getting good restriction I like my liquids room temp or warmer. So I add hot water to these shakes. Sometimes I will add skim milk too, to thin it, but keep it creamy. Yummy.

Bariatric Advantage has a powdered Meal Replacement in a bottle, they want you to add water to. I add some milk and hot water, thinner than they recommend. vanilla is YUMMY! They have a "sample" thing you can buy and get a few different examples of their protein stuff. I also like their Pro-Stat 64 that you can put in your water bottle.< /p>

For shakes from powder - I think designer whey is best. I like vanilla or strawberry). I used to mix it with ice and dry non-fat skim milk and water in a blender. Sometimes I'd add some fruit, and maybe some yogurt or wheat germ depending on what I needed for my nutrition for the day. This was always my evening snack, but now I don't like the cold.

My DH will be banded soon, and he has always tasted what I have been having, so now he knows which ones he prefers.

Come to think of it, Medifast has some nutritionally complete products that are NOT milkshakes, such as peach or raspberry iced tea, Cranberry-Mango fruit drink, tropical fruit drink, chai latte tea, Cappuccino, and hot cocoa. They are lower in carb, high in Protein, low in fat, and have all the Vitamins and minerals you need.

(No, I don't work for them LOL!)

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
