Joann,

After your knee replacement were you able to come home from the hospital or did you have to go to a rehab place? Going to a rehab place scares me the most.

Have you tried steroid injections? I did one in May before my cruise and it worked about a day or so and no more. I am wondering if another one of those would help in the short term until I got to goal. It scares the bajeebies out of me to reach goal, get knee replacement and then gain weight due to lack of working out. But heck, that will still be better than where I started at 300+ lbs!

Long, I was in the hospital for 3 days and then home. DH took a couple of days off work and stayed with me, then the weekend - same scenario. For the next week he came home for lunch to get my lunch and make sure I was doing everything I was supposed to do (is there such a thing as a "Father" hen???) After that I was on my own, and actually would have been okay fixing my own lunch during that week. He was just worried. The physical therapist came to my house 3 days a week for 2 or 3 weeks, and the visiting nurse came to give me an injection of coumadin a couple of times a week. I used a walker for a few days, then crutches, then a cane. I was driving by the fourth week and drove to my physical therapy sessions. It was a LONG time before I could sit comfortably in a regular chair - apparently the tissue in the back of the knee was traumatized and the pressure of the chair was very painful. In fact, that is the pain I remember the most. Walking was okay, therapy hurt some, but that improved quickly. I know of people who go back to work in a couple of weeks, but I could not sit in an office chair for more than 5-10 minutes - I have wondered if the fat tissue behind my knee was part of that problem. I was away from work for 3 months. Fortunately I worked for a good company and had good disability insurance. I also had a great doctor who insisted I NOT go back until I was ready.

It will be helpful for you if you have some help from friends and/or family for a week or so. You should not need someone with you all the time, but a little help with everyday tasks at first would be a good thing and should keep you out of a rehab center. Remember too - I was 60 years old when I had this done - you are 10 years younger. You will do fine. (so will I...)

Just don't live in pain when there is something you can do about it. You will have your band to help with the weight issue, and you will be surprised at how quickly you will be active again. The only time I think of that knee now is when I go through the metal detector at the airport (allow plenty of time for them to check you out).

Well, I am back from getting a fill. I only got .4cc and then I will go back in three weeks for another. Of course he asked how I was doing, and I told him about the Christmas baking. He said"noooooo, you can't do that". My DH consulted with him about gastric bypass and he said there wouldn't be a problem getting him approved. So, now we will be on the same eating plan. It will just make this journey so much easier.

Dr. Davis has a new book out on a complete guide to WLS. I ordered it from Amazon and he said he would sign it. I asked his PA about Big Medicine. They are still planning to have more episodes ,but don't have a date yet.

Long, I am so tempted to watch QVC,but with my husband's job still hanging in the balance I can't afford to be tempted. QVC is one of my favorite places to shop.

Hey there tonight gang (Monday). Had a good day today. On QVC issue, I have jewelry mostly but I have developed a love for that polish pottery. It is expensive but gosh it is so beautiful. My dh would not like how much that stuff costs but I got two pieces of it and I am hooked. Can't wait to get my kitchen done. Did okay on eating today. Pretty uneventful today. Hope everyone is doing good and behaving.

Hope the fill works for you Charlene. I remember you had trouble with the last one I think. Is your hubby also looking at the band or just bypass? I wish him luck in his decision it is such a individual one and not one procedure is the right one for everyone. He will have a great care giver in you since the diets are about the same you will know what he can and can't have.

Thanks Long. I really have been working on my bites and chews so I am hoping I do better with this fill. My husband is getting bypass. He doesn't like needles of any kind.

I started back with the weight loss bible study tonight. We got a special blessing.....two members of the church are fitness trainers and they are helping us without charge. They gave us a nutrition class tonight. I am excited about getting my body fat down. They also gave us some resistance training. I know things WILL change. I don't have any excuses now.

No TV watching for me today. Busy busy day. Though I just keep praying for our country.

Arelene, that's great about the personal trainers! What a wonderful gift to your group. Good luck with that! Do you know when your husbands bypass will be? I am glad he has found the right procedure for him.

Well gang, I am feeling the burn from my workout yesterday. It's not super sore but I can definitely feel I've done something. I go again today at 230pm. Today we workout with cords.

Hi everyone -

Just checkin in. Love to hear how you are all doing. I'm still struggling, but I'm not letting it get me down. I see the doc on Thursday and will have a real head-to-head about my disappointing weight loss. We'll see.

Hey Kathy

Yep - your doc sound like he wants the $$$ from the surgery but he thinks that all the work is up to you - it that was the case - then you didn't need surger - remember tell him about the steak.... If you had proper restriction you couldn't eat that much steak... Period end of story and tell him I said so.

Well, call it old age or ADD I forgot about the fill and ate chicken for lunch. Two bites into it and yep, slimed and pb'd. You would think I would learn. I am sipping on warm tea and ate Cream of Wheat for dinner.

My DH is going for bypass. The thought of getting fills and sliming is a real turn off to him. He has to lose at least 130lbs. At least we will be a team. We got fat together and we will get skinny together......all in a span of 40years.

I am excited about the personal trainers. I was embarrassed when she measured my fat, but she put me at ease. She really encouraged me. She said to only eat whole grains and keep my sugar intake to 40grams a day.She didn't say anything about carbs. I think she said 50 grams of Protein, but I know to eat more. Oh, and she said to weigh only once every two weeks. Don't know if I can do that. As far as training we were given resistance exercises with bands.

Today is a historical day in our Country. I watched the Inaguration but then had a Board meeting tonight, I tried to eat a piece of meatloaf today and got stuck. My eating patterns are not great. I have been under alot of stress lately and having a hard time with food so guess what? I am eating soft stuff to get something down. Today I had coffee, unjury with skim milk, lunch was meatloaf (had a hard time with that.) Then had a Protein bar. Tonight came home and had some cheese. Thats it for today. Oh yea I had brussel sprouts and would you believe I got stuck on those. Didn't walk either. Gotta get my A@#$ back into gear. I am playing with the same lb back and forth. Anyway to another subject, I thought the Innagural ball gown that Mrs. Obama wore was absolutely gorgeous. Well thats all today. Gonna get my hair done tomorrow.

Charlene - sugar really ise like carbs - carbs have tons of sugar so if you are eating 40 grms of surgar you will be limiting your carbs at the same time - I am looking at a can of green Beans at my desk - 4oz has total carbs 4 - sugars 2

South Beach ceral bar 15 carbs - 10 sugar - so they really go almost hand in hand..

Becky- Yes stress can make your band tighter - Now redoing your kitchen should be fun not stressful... well not until the construction part - that will be a pain - but you gotta look at the end picture and quit sweating the small stuff - it will work out - just think about it - one way or another everything we every worry about usually works it's self out..

(that's my personal phlisolphy anyway - not to say I don't worry at times cuz I do - but I try to always find the lesson to be learn and know that this to shall pass)

Becky GF I want you to eat more regular foods!!!! I bet if you start eating regular foods and not all this Protein powder - Protein Bars those lbs will start coming off. How's your hunger - It just seems like I ate more food than you are at this stage - yes I was working out more - but that's cuz I have a gym - ok old age here - didn't you join one or were looking into joining one??)

Small bites - slow & chew... Sometimes if my meat is dry it will cause problems..

I want you to carve 1 hour out of your day for you... You can do that can't you.. Weather permiting go for that walk - if not drive to gym - or turn on the TV or Radio to your fave music and Dance around the house.. Move your butt in some way- Heck we are the same age - Were you a disco girl or a rocker chick - well just think back to those days and let loose...

I agree Michelle looked wonderful in her gown - and I gotta say you can see the love between the 2 of them.. It will be nice to see youth in the White House..

Janet, I got your message and that weekend will be great. I will find out where your aunt is and find us a place to meet. I'm so excited !! How do you send privage messages?

PJ

Click my name - then under my pic it says send message or something like that - I am not a good teacher - I gotta be doing it - I don't remember whats what _ I have to show pple how to do it :0) heck just email me

Yeah, I thought so on the carb thing. I have been looking on labels ..........I still am eating too many carbs, but with this new fill that may cut it down. I just ate a piece of fish....went down....but then I ate a piece of bread....yuk!...stuck! So, I will be cutting down on the carbs.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
