Getting Banded 5/28, Any Advice??

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! :rolleyes2: I will be banded this coming Wednesday, May 28th by Roc Bauman in Concord, NC. I am super excited but just ready to get it over with. I have been doing my pre-op diet for about 6 days now, and I've already lost 6 lbs. Other than my pre-op diet, does anyone who has already been through this have any advice or suggestions for me?? Anything I should definitely have at home for my recovery time, things like that??

I had my band two days ago and one thing I remembered from all the reading is drink slow, which I have and have had no problems. I also bought a magic bullet which is easy to clean and works very well. I did not have to do the pre -op diet and actually gains 9 pounds my last month of waiting. I have enrolled into a test program for the doctors so we are doing things differently. I am off my sugar pills, BP pills cut in half all the rest are gone. No sickness just some soreness like I have been doing allot of sit ups.

I have had two TKR and one revision in 9 months so this wasn't near as bad. But eat slow, drink slow and you will do just fine, walk back and forth the house or go out side. "Weight Loss Surgery", for dummies is a great book to read it covers everything. "The Real Skinny on weight lost surgery" is very good also. Good luck its not bad at all.

I had the banding on monday 19th... Stick to your Protein Drinks and try hard to shrink the liver- I was able to get one less incision since my liver was very small... I also recommend ice at your house-- ice packs on my shouldersand stomach helped with the gas pains-- it really works.. I have had no trouble and I'm just on Protein drinks and fruit (100%) drinks.. I feel great. rally nothing to worry about-- good luck

hey fotogurl make sure that u have at least 2 boxes of gas-x strips or chewable.. in case someone looses a box...lol that happened to me... and i just found them today and my son lost them last friday.... how sad...lol.. any hoo.. i would get plenty of bottled Water because it is easier to grab a bottle of water and if u have the crystal lite singles it easier and faster to make sure u drink something.. get Soup, one other thing i would get is a back massager u can get the kind that the batteries go in, turn it on and just lay down put it behind your back and that will help the gas to come out also... uhhhhh u r really not going to want to eat much.. but make sure u have your shakes and everything and u should be ok....

Thanks for all the great advice ~ this forum is awesome!

mstrina ~ Thanks! I added the Gas-x to my list. I've heard that's some of the worst pain and that it lingers on too. My husband had gall bladder surgery years ago, and he thought he was dying from the gas pain. I've heard that ice packs help with the gas....anyone tried that?

I have been doing really well with my 2 Protein drinks & one small meal each day. Today I walked about 1 1/2 miles with my daughter. But....I wanted some mexican food really bad, and I ordered a half an order of A.C.P., my absolute favorite. I only ate half of the half, no chips, no cheese dip, and no tortillas. It was really good. It's just grilled chicken & onions & rice. Funny this is, even though I ate MUCH better than I usually would've, I still feel guilty about eating it. I was ready to go walking again at 9:00 tonight, but it was dark. I'm doing another 1 1/2 miles in the morning.

I have a question about your liver. Does exercising decrease the size of your liver....or is it only by eating less?

eating less will shrink the liver... it works like that because your liver dosent have to do that much work breaking down your food and everything... what u ate for your 1 meal is not bad at all dont feel bad about it.. my dr. told me to drink the 2 shakes and to eat 1 meal... and pretty much what ever i had a taste for within reason i ate for my 1 meal... and my Dr. told me that everything went perfect so u r not doing bad at all....

actually i found a heating pad to be one of the best ways to get rid of the gas. and it feels good on your muscles, which can sometimes be a little tense from surgery.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
