Hello Everyone- I'm interesting in finding other insulin dependent type II lap band patients to compare notes and discuss the unique challenges that face us. Having been banded 9/07 I am currently adjusting my fast-acting insulin to 1 unit/10g carbs. Problem is that I am always not able to eat the portion I base the dosage one. Does anyone else have these challenges?

I am also and insulin dependant Type II facing the same challenges. I take Novorapid 1 unit/7 grms carbs and Levemir 45 units 1X daily. It has happened many times that I take my dose and then canot eat my portion and so of course go low. Since I realize that I cannot predict if I will eat it or now, I wait until I finish to take my insulin. I know that is not optimal, but it is much better than the lows (which will do more damage).

When I was first banded, I did not have any changes in my insulin dosages and was very disappointed. I fell off the wagon so to speak for a number of months and stopped testing my BS. Recently I picked myself up again and have been following bandster rules and cheking bs 4x/day. I have rediced my Levemir from 50 - 45 units in less than 2 weeks. In addition, when I went to my doc she thought I had switched my bood samples with someone else(just kidding). My fasting was great and my HGBa1C was perfect! Interesting since I was binge eating and not check my bs for most of that time. So, I guess that the band is working on my diabetes now. NExt ...bloodpressure meds! :wink2:

I am newly banded, last Tuesday to be exact. Ever since I came home from surgery my blood sugars have been high. Like up to 380. Called endo and she had me come in. Well apparently I was not taking the correct insulin. Before surgery I was on Regular insuline U500. Since the surgery she has me in Regular insulin U100. I have not been under 200 yet. I am eating nothing, my carbs are below 50 per day, no sugars, no fats. Complete liquid stage of the diet. I have dropped from the over 300's down to the 200's, but what gives. Why wont my sugars go down to normal?

Often after trauma or stress to the body, our BS will rise in response. Give it some time, once you are more recovered you will see them come back into normal range as long as you are taking the proper amount of insulin.

Thanks Susan, I am sure that is what the problem is, but how long does out bodies take to recover from surgery trauma?

That is hard to say - everyone is different, but just be sure to monitor your bs many times during the day. Good luck!

I'm a long-acting insulin (Lantus) type II diabetic, also on Metformin. I developed diabetes AFTER losing 75 pounds (about a year ago) after I got my band. Go figure. I'm in a crappy place right now, not testing, eating too much (my band is empty, I'm going for revision surgery next week) and have recently figured out that if I cut down on my meds, I don't gain weight when my sugars are high. I believe the correct term for this is diabulemia. Talk about PATHETIC. It's my dirty little secret that no one knows about and I hate myself for doing this to my body. I feel desperate NOT to gain weight and I feel like I did pre-band, just eating and eating and eating, I feel like I can't stop. I feel like a sugar junkie, the more I eat, the higher my sugars go, the more I crave (as you guys already know I'm sure), the more I eat. I exercise like a madwoman every day to try and keep my weight down as well. What's wrong with me??? On the outside I look great after all the weight loss, but on the inside I'm destroying my body and my future. I have to stop this. Has anyone else ever been in this spot and done the things I've been doing? If so, I'd love to talk and share. Thanks for listening.

I'm on Novolin 70/30 68 units in the morning and 60 at night. Still don't

help yes and i take meds too. It still runs 285 or more. I was at the Dr office and it was 320. I take so much meds i'm hoping the surg will get me off all of this.Has anyone out there been able to get off of they med.

Yes mam, I have been where you are and don't like it at all. I want to be off all the insulin. Seems like a vicious circle, eat something you're not supposed to have to take more insulin can't lose because of so much insulin. I am trying to get motivated to exercise more and hopefully that will help. We all need to help each other. Hearing from others going through the same problems helps me. You are not alone. Stay focused and know the diabetes is a big fight we can win. It is hard for sure, we all pray that they find a cure.
