I got my band 3/11/08 from Dr. Michael Wood From ABMI at detroit medical center. I was going to get my first fill today 6 weeks post op and my Dr called and told me he has a new policy and will only be doing fills once a month and so don't come in till may 31. I will be 10 weeks post op this dosn't sound right. I've lost 38 pounds since I was banded but I'm getting hungry and eating more. I called my Dr. and he told me to have will power:cursing::):cursing:. My surgury was $27000.00 since he got paid I feel he is blowing me off what should I do. I don't want to take a step backwardmad.gif

O this is wrong on so many levels!!! Even if I wasn't self pay, this is not acceptable. They need to hear from you and hear from you often. Call the office and demand to speak with the doctor if he doesn't call you today call again and then tell him I need a fill and when you paid the fee you were told you would get a fill in 6 weeks and that's what you intend on having. Let him know you would have no problems with the change if it didn't effect your health, out come but you feel it does and you want your fill now. You can be very stern and remain respectful and you better believe there are others who received a fill bc they wouldn't accept it.

If you show you are unhappy he should be quick to make you happy bc he has to know you can report him and cause all kinds of problems even if the accusation ends up being false.

Ok people!! I am waiting on approval and now I'm wondering if the band really works after reading everyone's posts!! But at the same time I see the weight everyone has lost, so it probably does work!! Like other people here, I have a serious food addiction and a bottomless pit of a stomach and to top it off, no will power. So reading all of these posts about no restriction is not good.

For all of those out there who have had one or more fills - Do you start feeling restriction eventually?? God I hope so!!

No worries, we are all complaining, but haven't been filled yet, so we don't have the restriction :) I'm sure (hope!) we will all do much better once we are well on our way.

This post makes me feel SO much better!!! I am almost 5 weeks out and get my 1st fill on May 12th and I am SO hungry!! I am on a regular diet, but 2-3oz Protein and then a little fruit or veggies doesn't do much for me...I am really trying to watch portion sizes and make good choices. Thankfully I have only regained .8 of a pound...

Has anyone heard of someone getting restrictions w/the 1st fill???

It seems like most take at least two...

Hang in there everyone!!!!!!

P.S. When my DH and kids went to DairyQueen this afternoon I didn't get anything!!

My Dr. changed his policy and wont give me my first fill till 5/31. I had my surgery on 3/11. I get so, so hungry I find myself eating more and more had 3 slices of pizza the other day ( I took off the cheese) better then the whole pizza i would eat before my band. but I hate myself for it. I cant control my hunger. I keep picking. the last 2 weeks thank god I haven't gained any weight I started at 267on 3/11 now 226 and holding no weight loss or gain in 2 weeks. My Dr said he will not give me my first fill till 5/31 and to have will power and don't worry if I gain 5 pounds but I'm worried the monster will come back and I will gain it all back + much more after all I've been through with pain and $ for the band surgery. I try to not eat any sugar of fatty foods my family says I'm being to hard on myself I did't gain all my weight in 3 months so I should not expect to lose it that fast

WOW! You've lost a lot of weight! Good job! Hang in there...we are all in this same boat! I agree though, if you had willpower you wouldn't need a lap band! Gimme a break! I hate it when I read that the doctors tell patients that.

I'm sorry you don't get your fill for a while. Are you exercising? Is there anything you can do to take your mind off of food?

Hey gang. I have to say I have been reading everyone's posts and laughing. I love the bit about eating each other! HA!

I was banded on April 25th and so still on mushies. I managed fine on the broth and juice phase for the first few days, but admit that I did have some creamy Soup 2 days before I was supposed to. Not a lot, but some. I have had a few bites of real food, other than my mashed potatoes this week. When I cook for my family I have to taste to see if I get it right! But I haven't eaten anything "hard" like meat. Just some jalapeno cornbread, noodles and eggs. And just a couple of bites here and there, no full servings.

I haven't really been "hungry" but miss flavor and chewing and swallowing. However, I can tell about 10 minutes after I have eaten if it's been too much. I get a pain in what I imagine is my pouch. Just a reminder that it's too full or something. I eat slow, but it takes awhile after I have eaten to get that feeling.

I am looking forward to having fish next week. I love fish so that will be a treat.

I have a followup appointment with my surgeon on Thursday and I'll ask him then when I can get my first fill. It will be interesting to see the difference between now and then.

I had lost 6 pounds from surgery to this week, but I think that I have probably gained a couple of those back since I started mushies. Not sure, but I wouldn't be suprised. I still feel a little swollen and distended. No "sucking" it in or tight clothes yet.

It's helpful for us to all have this place to come together. At least we can vent without our significant others having to hear it. Although, I have to say my husband has been great. He told his boss today that he'd starve to death on what I was eating. Since I have always been the bigger eater, that made my day!

Hang in there! We can do this!

You know, I'm the same way about the 'full feeling' coming late. I was talking about it the other day to a friend. I eat what I think is the right amount, but sometimes I eat a little more and I don't notice anything until much later. At least 10 minutes or more. It's like my brain just doesn't get it! Even though it takes so long to eat, all the chewing (still on mushies, but chewing anyway) you'd think my brain would have time to catch up! LOL

Weird.

If you want to know if the band works go to forums and look at the before and after pics, and you will have no problem deciding, wish I had done it 5 yrs ago.

I was banded Sept 07 and was sent for my first fill Dec 07 but they couldn`t find the port. After xray Jan 08 it was discovered the port had been put in the wrong way. Last week 29 May I have had the port reversed but still no fill that will be in 3 weeks. All this time I can eat anything I haven`t gained but have been to the gym and swimming each day to try and maintain my weight.

I went for my first fill on May 30, 2008, the doctor was unable to find the port so I was sent across the street for an x-ray. It was discovered the port moved side-ways. He was able to give me 1 cc of saline, but I don't know yet what the doctor is going to do...........

Yesterday 3 weeks after my port reversal I should have had my 1st fill but unfortunately around the operation area a haematoma has formed and had to be drained. My next appointment is in 2 weeks and by then I hope I get my 1st fill.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
