What to do until fill????

Recommended Posts

my surgery was 4/11--my fill isn't until 6/19--my own fault, I am going to be out of town when I should have my fill. I'm not having trouble with hunger mainly because I am having trouble with everything going through the stomach and the bowels so quicklky. the cramping and gas are unbelieveable. It definetly takes away my appetite but I don't recommend it. Anyone else having bowel problems? I thought this wasn't supposed to happen with the band.:blushing:

I'm starving. And bitchy.

And still have another week of fluids before I move onto mushies. hangin.gif

LMAO!! So you've joined me, eh? LOL

Okay, so here's what happened to me at the doctor's office today! Apparently they have sympathy and felt pity on me. I was given a prescription for Adipex (phentermine) today. It's supposed to curb my appetite, but is safe.

Not all bandsters are fortunate enough to not be hungry, darnit! They don't want me increasing my Protein though for fear of messing with the kidney's. I hate taking pills, but I also am running out of will power here. And the 'bitchy' factor isn't going well either!

Any thoughts?

Yep. That pretty much sums it up. I was apparently vocal enough that they said I could move to mushies a few days early (I also pointed out that there are new recommendations that there aren't necessarily benefits to the extended liquid diets).

I have found that my food processor is my best friend and as disgusting as it looks, you can put 'regular people food' in the blender with either milk or broth and go to town on it then drink it. It at least tastes better than the boring stuff and you can get more nutrients in (unless you're still doing the Protein shake routine).

I do have to admit that I was stuck in traffic one day with the family and resorted to a small chocolate shake from Checkers. Can I just tell you that I think it may have been better than sex?:blushing::lol:

Today was my first day of mushies and they're so much more satisfying than liquids. I put some chilli in the blender and it was sooooooo good!

On a happy note, I'm down 8.4 pounds in the 2 weeks since surgery. :blushing:

Hi April Avengers - I haven't been on the computer much the last few weeks. I was banded April 10th and I get hungry (REALLY hungry) about 4 hrs after a meal. I spent only a few days on the mushy stage and started right in on baked salmon, cooked veggies, etc. I'm also fighting the 'big bite' syndrome and have to remember to take smaller bites and chew, chew, chew. One thing the nutritionist mentioned and is also in my notebook from the clinic is to avoid liquids 1 hour before and 1-2 hours after a meal. The liquids speed the food through your stomach and you become hungry sooner. Avoiding the liquids helps you to feel fuller for a longer period of time. It seems to help me some, but if I wait too long to eat then I fall back into taking big bites and swallowing larger amounts than I should.

I had a hiatal hernia corrected at the same time as the lap band and it is extremely painful if I try to swall a larger bite than I should. I am visiting my regular doctor tomorrow and will ask him about this because it is SO painful when it happens I'm wondering if something is wrong. The pain is about 2 inches up from the bottom of my breatbone, a little to the right of my breastbone. Has anyone else had a hernia corrected at the same time as lap band surgery?

Just to answer your question... I had a hiatus hernia corrected along with my band op last week. I haven't suffered any pains like the ones you described.

But it's really nice to have got rid of the never-ending reflux I've been putting up with for the last couple of years!

Yes - My doctor saw the hernia during the operation and fixed it. I had pain but thought it was more from the surgery itself (not the hernia repair). Basically pains in my left shoulder and neck (from the gas). All was good after about 4 - 5 days. Started walking then eventhough stomach still felt like I did 100 sit ups.

I was banded on 3/31/08 and feel like I'm starving at times. I try to eat something healthy for a snack, yogurt, baked chips, Protein Bar, etc. But I am in the between stage of mushie and solid. So are now I'm eating 4-5 times a day. I feel a little better knowing it not just me suffering right now; first fill won't be until 5/30/08. I try to exercise to compensate some of my eating..............

HI, I haven't posted in awhile because I am discouraged to say the least. I went to the doctor last week and i can eat any food now that is tolerable but no junk food or sweet for obvious reasons. However if I could of done this b-4 band I wouldn't need the band. I am failing miserably. I am walking 1.5 miles a day at least sometimes more from day 3 after surgery no problem. However, eating is another story. I lost 10 pounds since surgery now I have gained 2 back already. I can eat as much as I use to if I wanted I still feel like I am restricting myself not going over 1200 cal day but I am still gaining. I know I am eating to much but 1. I am hungry and 2. I have a problem and it feels as if I don't have a band right now. Good news my doc is giving me my first fill next week, that is only 3.5 weeks after surgery. I hope and pray this will work. My doc keeps saying after your fill it will work but I must say depression is all I feel right now.

letschat: Hang in there! I'm so glad you're getting your fill so soon! WOW! My doctor said no fill until 6 weeks, period. BUT, he gave me Adipex (diet pills) to curb my appetite. I said the exact same thing...if I had all this will power I wouldn't need the band!!! ARGH!

Keep us posted...and btw...don't stay away when you're discouraged, we are here for you! That's what LBT is all about!

This is the funniest thread I've read. It's not funny that your hungry but funny how you've expressed it - "sad to say I've adjusted to no chewing." I was banded on March 3. I also felt that way but what kept me going was I kept telling myself it was temporary and that I would eat again. I am now 8 weeks post op and eat normal food but not alot. I had my first fill on April 23. I don't feel much restriction but that's ok because I am eating good and still losing. I am not hungry.

for instance today i ate:

1 hb egg (100 cal), 1 farina packet (100 cal)

1 scoop of chick salad (250 cal), 1 small salad (100)

4 oz flounder (200 cal), cauliflower (100cal)

1 EAS Protein shake (i love these) (230 cal)

Hang in there! It really does get better.

Thanks for the encouragement Id0008!! I know this can't last forever, but as you already know, when you're in the NOW, you can't seem to focus on anything else! LOL

So you like our graphic descriptions of sheer, animalistic hunger??? LOL

I feel the same way that you all do... I am SO hungry. I have gained 1 pound since starting on solids and I am counting my calories. trying to stay below 1200 but I today was at 1380... doing the best I can but could eat as if there is nothing there. I have done well up to this point and do not plan to head in the other direction. I have my first fill on May 13 and CAN not wait for more restriction. Hope it helps to know that there are others that are feeling the hunger pains as well. Keep up the good work and the positive attitude and it will all work out! We can and WILL do this!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
