Ok.. don't know how to explain this but curious if anyone else has been through this. It's happened to me about 4 times now. I get this INSTANT feeling of something tickling and dry in my throat that causes fierce coughing for at least 2 minutes. Painful, embarrasing, breathtaking, tears in the eyes, etc. When it's happening, I'm not eating or recently ate. The best way for me to explain it is that its dry and tickling. Today I actually got choked and threw up trying to get it to stop. Of course it was just liquids bc it was so early but gross! Natually, the rest of the day, I can't eat much if anything. It's like it irritates the band and it's hard to eat for a while afterwards. Anyone else been through this?? May not even be band related. /QUOTE]

Hello Wendy, This might not help you any. But I have had this happen before, but I am an ex smoker and get those tickles every once in a while. (I don't know if you ever smoked or not.) So dry and irritating, and it seems like nothing you do helps it.

Congratulations on the ultra sound and listening to the little one's heart beat! The time will seem to drag, then before you know it, you have a baby! Good luck with your pregnancy. Hopefully you don't have morning sickness.

Congrats on the baby Wendy!! I know you are sooo excited! My aunt (who is 3 years younger than me) is expecting a little girl in August. I just love little babies!

I will be at the meeting on Saturday! Are any of you planning on attending the fashion show next week?

=) Hope all is well with everyone! (=

When is the fashion show? Is it at the meeting?

Its April 25 at St. Vincent's Birmingham - in the Bruno's Conference Center. I got the info in the mail last week. I think it is $5 a person. I believe they are calling it the Celebration of Life. If anyone would like to meet-up and go let me know. Or if anyone needs to know where to go let me know.

From the videos I have seen - it looks very inspirational.

Grr... I got a denial letter today in the mail from BCBS of AL, but it was under my primary contract, which doesn't cover WLS (has an exclusion in the policy). I have two insurances, but my secondary is the one that covers it, not my primary. Dr. Schmitt's office submitted it to the wrong contract. This is a big confusing mess, but my husband works for Blue Cross, and tried to explain it to me. For billing purposes, they have to submit to my primary, and after the charge is denied, then the secondary pays. But for pre-determination purposes, they have to submit it to the contract that is going to pay out.

Dr. Schmitt's office filed it last Friday, so I guess I lost a week. I'll have to get them to re-file tomorrow, I guess. How dissappointing!!

What's so wierd is the letter was worded in a way that sounded like I didn't meet medical criteria:

Dear Patient:

A predetermination of benefits for the patient's proposed treatment is complete. Based on the information provided, it has been determined that we are unable to provide benefits for the following services:

43770 Lap place gastr adj device

These services do not meet our medical criteria. If you feel we have reached this determination in error, please feel free to submit an additional request to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama explaining why this procedure should be considered further.

This courtesy copy is being provided as a requirement of the Department of Labor Regulations. This information has been requested from your provider. No action is required of you at this time.

We appreciate the opportunity to review your request and hope that this information is helpful.

Sincerely,

Customer Service

It was denied the same day as it was submitted, Friday. My hubby said all of BCBS was closed on friday (except Customer Service), so it must have been electronically submitted. If your contract doesn't have benefits, it automatically rejects it.

I hate insurance!!

**Frustrated** :)

Hey, anybody have BCBS AL that might be willing to share their claims report with me? You can black out your personal information. My co-worker and I went to the seminar together & wants to get the lap band, but her insurance only pays 50% of the ALLOWED costs for the Surgeon and Anesthesia. She's contacted Schmitt & Miles office, but nobody has responded back to her or given her the amounts. She's trying to decide if she can afford it or not.

We would be very grateful!! And if you don't have a scanner, you can fax it (it comes to my email as a PDF) to 1-866-410-6532.

it would really depend on what type of contract the insurance company has with that Hospital BC they would get billed at a discounted rate depending on their contract. like the hospital i went to billed my insurance 30000 for total costs but it was discounted due to the contract they have with empire blue at 11000 total. big difference huh.. I think my total costs for the anesthesiologist was about 400. Either way she can always set up payments thru the hospital and make whatever she can afford payment wise each month. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I know each contract is different, and that is the problem she is running in to. She is not in a position to finance or make payments, and will need to pay the whole thing as a lump sum, but she can't get any idea of how much that might be. I just figured someone on here might have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and have a claim statement.

ok my insurance only said they would cover 50% of the surgery and io would have to pay the other part.

i ended up paying about 1060 to dr miles and about 400 to the anesthesiologist. it wasnt over 1500 togather i know that. i will try to fine my paper work some where.

like kaninag said when they bill it it was way higher then they told me it would be then i ended up not paying that much. when you go in to have the surgery you have to sign a fourm tyhat gives you the amount to pay if they dont. it was like 6k i believe.

ok heres what i paid dr.miles.

from start to now.

first visit was 156-- i believe.

300.00 for pre-op visit

and 575.00 -is what bcbs didnt pay

and some co-pays along the way but nothing over 30 bucks.

now i did pay st.vincent east 100 dollars when i did my pre-op visit for the in out patient co-pay

and i had to pay the anesthesiologist close to 400 bucks. and i believe that is it.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
