Is it possible to have restriction without fills?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was banded 3 weeks ago and am not sure if I am feeling any effect from the band. My doctor said that some folks feel a bit of restriction from just getting the band...but I don't think I'm one of them. I just finished some roast beef (deli sliced), a banana, and some oatmeal and I'm still hungry. Grrrr...also, how long did you have to wait until your first fill?

Thanks,

Lise

It's normal not to have restriction before fills. It's what is referred to as "bandster hell"...the time from your surgery until you get proper restriction. I had my first fill 4-5 weeks from surgery.

Lise, my doctor makes you wait 6 weeks for a fill. Once you start getting fills you will find that your hunger will deminish. That being said, it may take you several to feel that way. Good luck.

I had my first fill at 5 weeks. But even that did nothing. It wasn't until my second fill about 2 months after my surgery that I got good restriction.

Not me -- from about the 3-week mark out til my 2nd fill I didn't really feel the restriction. The good thing about NWWLS is that after your first fill (around the 6 week mark), they don't force you to wait some random length of time until you get another fill. So if your first fill doesn't help, call a week or two later and make another appt.

My post op diet was quite restrictive, and lasted for 6 weeks! Then after that I was on to a full diet, once I found I could eat solid Protein without issue, I could get a fill, so they average around the 7 week mark with my Dr. With the first fill, I barely felt anything, some restriction if I ate too much too fast----but I didn't get true restriction until my 2nd fill----even though it was a minute amount!

Just be sure to allow yourself time to heal....it is really important!!

yeahhh - that's why i love NWWLS!!! They are just fantastic!!!

I have my first fill scheduled for April 1st but i'm going to see if i can get it bumped a few days so i can have it the previous friday...that way i only have to go through one more of these horrible weekends of post-band/pre-fill hell!

Hi neighbor! I am in Everett too. I had my surgery with Dr. Landerholm at the puget sounds surgerical center in edmonds. I received my first fill 4 weeks after surgery. Another 2 weeks after. May have a 3rd in a couple of weeks when I have my check up with doctor and NUT.

Good Luck,

Kathy

I was banded on 11-6-07 and still have not had a fill. My weight loss has been moving along so I have not had a fill. I feel like I have enough restriction to keep on pushing along. Im not sure if I would have had more loss with a fill but I am happy so far so why fix it if it aint broke??

good luck!

I had my first fill 7 weeks out, although my doctor usually does then 6 weeks after surgery. I had restriction at first, but it only lasted two weeks. However, I lost 10 lb in those two weeks! I had my second fill in January and was actually too tight for about three weeks, but now I am at a good spot. I've lost about 15 lb since the second fill.

I have not had a fill and I am 4 months out and I am losing just fine. My surgeon said he will not even consider filling me til my weightloss slows dramatically. He said I have lost the amount of weight that some lose in a years time.

I am happy with my status thus far.

I went 6 mos with out a fill. Like you, when it slowed I decided it was time. There is only a finite amount of room in the band so my thinking is use it when you need it.

Most folks need it ASAP. I guess we're just lucky, huh?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
