I am scheduled for May

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone-

I just returned from a week vacation in palm springs. Ate too much food (surprise), but am back on track now that I'm back in the "real world" as they call it. Ha ha. Looking forward to May 22nd for certain now. First pre-op appointments are this wednesday for blood work, ekg, ultrasound, etc.

To all-glad it went well with telling your mom/parents. My mom knows, her main concern was whether or not I'd be able to have grandkids for her still. Ha ha. silly lady.

I'm so glad to have you all here as a support group. It means a lot. People in my life support me, but I worry they get sick of listening, do you know what I mean?!?

I have been away for awhile again. My mom is in Hospice in Ill and I go every couple weeks to see her from MI. I have been keeping up with the forum though.

Welcome to all who joined after me. I am one of the first for MAY's forum. I could hardly wait to tell everyone here.

However, I mentioned in an early post that only one friend knows and no family members at all. Yes, my husband is very supportive and my one son and his wife. I have yet to tell my only other son and his wife. I thought I would wait until the surgery gets close to MAYBE tell them. They live one hour from here and my surgery is Thurs., May 8th, two days before Mother's Day and I know they will be wanting to plan something with us. I am not so sure I could hide a liquid diet on Mother's Day. I will not tell my three sisters at all. They are all thin and two of them run marathons. They never understood my weight problem and were mean about it. So why tell them anything.

I am glad I am back and am so looking forward to April 24th when I start my two pre-weeks of my liquid diet. It will be the start of getting my closer to the surgery.

I am glad all of you are doing so well and getting ready for our Band days!!!

Allison, I am so impressed that living at home you were able to seek this out and not tell your Mom sooner! Wow...I am glad the secret is out though and she can be a support.

Talk about old fashioned Dad's? Mine has always been well meaning but honestly brutal about my weight...He played football for college! So, now after 40+ years, I finally am at peace about the overweight...ok obesity...thing...I am not going to torture myself anymore because I know how hard I have tried and my genetics are just that much stronger! With the band as a tool, my hard work can show off!

Hehehe I'm pretty sneaky I guess. Now that I'm in college they don't really pay much attention to whats going on in my life anymore lol.

Mae: I'm sorry to hear about your Mom being in hospice. I went through it last year with my Mom. It is a difficult journey, but hang in there.

Bad night last night with my CPAP machine  I am tired and cranky now!!!! I'm putting in a call in to the tech today. I felt like I could not catch my breath!!!

I'll feel better after I have my coffee:rolleyes2:

Congratulations "awomangodcanuse"!!! Have you gone to any pre-op appts? I went to one yesterday with my surgeon. Tomorrow I have to go to see the anesthesiologist. I am told that it is a 3 hr. appt!!!

I leave to go on vacation on Sunday (no computer ), so I will be out of touch until the 21st when I return. I am sure that my emotions will be changing from sheer excitement and anticipation to fear!!! I have been through other abdominal surgeries, so I'm sure I'll be fine. I will warn the O.R. staff that I will be hyperventilating until I go under!!!!

Keep us posted on your progress!!! We both have the exact same amt. of weight to lose too :frown:.

bandfan1.... I hyperventilated when they put the IV in me when they induced my labor... I ended up not needing it as I had a C-section.... damn them! So that is really the only part that I am freaking out about and I too may be hyperventilating until they put me under!

Hey bandfan :wink2: I posted a couple posts back about the conversation I had with my mom. SHE actually brought it up! She had seen some things in the mail for me from my surgeon. She was concerned about a lot but I know that I can teach her more and help her feel more comfortable about the whole situation. Thanks for all the support everyone and bandfan, I'm sure your mom would be very proud of you !

Allison

hey Allison,

glad things went well with your Mom. telling family members when you can already expect opposition (or at the very least, hesitation) is really difficult - I've totally been there! I'll be threading about my experience with my sister soon.

you hit the nail on the head, though - educating those who are unsure of what you're doing is the very best thing to do. I think people who are not sure of what you're about to do are the most reluctant to be supportive. the more they know, the more they will be able to understand. whether or not they exercise that ability is all up to them..

anyway, just wanted to congrat you on your difficult convo. doesn't it feel better getting it off your chest?

My family were the LAST to know about this!! My friends are much more supportive.... Sometimes I wonder if my family even cares :rolleyes:

Anyway, when I did start telling them (only a select few...I have 8 siblings), they were pretty receptive. Of course none of them offered to come and help me while I am down.... My friends are my lifeline!!!!!! :scared2:

Bottom line is that you have to get the support from the people that you know that you can depend on. Don't let anybody try to change your mind or talk you out of it.......

I have already had a couple of people say "Are you sure that you want to do this"?.... I scratched them right off of my list!!

Have a great day everyone!!!!!

43 days until surgery date here. That's just over a month, I'm so excited. I had a pre-opp appointment today at the hospital: EKG, CardioPulmonary, Bloodwork, Urine Sample, Abdominal Ultrasound and a chest X-ray. All that on an empty stomach. Rough time that was. First time I've ever almost passed out after a blood draw. I was starving when I left, that was for sure. Hope everyone is doing great!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
