Tai Chi?

Recommended Posts

Anyone here practice Tai Chi?

According to a few websites that list what activities burn X amount of calories, Tai Chi burns more calories than walking. I have always wanted to try it, and I've found a DVD for beginners, but I haven't purchased it yet.

Anyone have any advice, or thoughts on this?

Actually, my mom and I went to classes for a about 3 months, twice a week, and really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how many calories we actually burned doing it - - but, we did have a good time!!! I think more than anything, my balance and concentration were improved. It was kind of like I learned to zone out everything else and just concentrate on the form. We were in a really small class with a terrific instructor, so that was great. Alas, my son wrestles on his high school team and we're right in the crazy part of the season. The wrestling matches take a ton of time, so the t'ai chi is on the back burner for now. But, I would like to get back into it when I get some more time. Good luck, I really did enjoy it.

I have taken Tai Chi classes since mid summer and amazed at the level of strengthening (and sometimes sweating) occurs. In addiiton to swimming, I found Tai Chi to be super relaxing and amazingly made me "get in touch" with my body that for so long I had ignored (for a variety of reasons aside from being fat). Go for it. I think you will like. It's not something you may get right away but practice, practice, practice!

Thanks! I think I will go ahead and buy that DVD and give it a shot. Hey, if nothing else, I will have spent some quality time making myself look silly, right?

SO, my next question is, can it be learned from a DVD, or do you really need to have an instructor/trainer?

I took Tai Chi for over a year. Had a bad car accident and had to stop for a while. I would love to get back into it.

What DVD are you all talking about?

I really liked the way it made me feel. I did not lose any weight but I was relaxed and flexible.

I am going to start classes. I had been traveling to Dallas to attend some Sufi breathing and movement classes that have been discontinued. Tai Chi and Yoga are the closest things to them so I am going to switch for now. Hopefully will get back to my original studies soon.

I want to do Tai Chi, HOWEVER I don't have $80 a month for the weekly classes , but when I do I will be doing it. My massage therapist goes and she really has encouraged me to do it. BTW after a month post op she did a massage on me she couldn't believe how "soft" I was and easy to work on. It was so much easier to define my muscles. She was impressed. At first she was skeptical of my choice but now she thinks it was really good for me and she is happy for me.

Check here, their classes are by voluntary donation...

Taoist Tai Chi Society of the USA - Tallahassee FL

If not, there are places like the YMCA and other organizations who have better rates.

Tai-Chi is great, and if you can swing it classes are much better than videos. It can help with balance and flexibility, but it is not much of a workout.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
