sandi2004..thank you for the encouragement. My thought is weight loss is actually not hard, it is keeping it off that is the difficult road. So feel once the weight is gone, the band is there to help with keeping that weight off. Maybe my thinking on this is wrong. Want you to know that I've been to your website and it is awesome. Keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words about my blog. Yes, taking off the weight is "easy" - to a point. Every year we get older it is more and more difficult to get it off and keeping it off has ALWAYS been the issue for me, my entire life. Diets work. Sticking to them is difficult and the band gives you the tool that assists in keeping you eating smaller portions, but we still have to make the choices. A steady diet of ice cream would not result in any weight loss and our bands do not even begin to restrict the amount of ie cream we can eat. We just learn that ice cream is not a good choice (I know,, we already learned that years ago) and select something else that has less sugar, more Protein and may actually be good for us. Take a look at this post about it being easy:

Hi Sandi2004: Thanks for the encouraging words. I read your blog and it is both inspiring and informational. I really need to ask my surgeon some important questions to give me the confidence to go forward. Your blog has really helped me. cat lady

Went to the Dr. yesterday. He didn't agree with the .05 unfill I suggested. He wasn't concerned about my not getting in all my calories. At this AM's weigh in I lost the 2.5 I gained last week plus 3.5 more. Have another appt in 6 weeks. Nut suggested a Protein called nectar I think I might like. Time will tell.

I'm excited I am out of the twentys. 217.5 this am.

oldone, I was just wondering how you are doing after your "banding" yesterday. When you feel up to it, give us a quick update. You are going to be so happy that you did this. It is worth a few days of discomfort....really it is:tongue2:!

ladykcusa-Thank you for the welcome. I see you might be in my neck of the woods. My surgery is being done by Malley Surgerical Center in Mission, KS by Dr. C. Thomas Hitchcock. Definitely ignoring the negative because for me the negative without this surgery will be an early demise. So I'm telling myself that I'm like the "little engine that could". Thanks for responding. :frown:

Not so old , Oldone. I was 69 when I had mine done last year. How lucky am i when i read the hurdles you have to jump to get the surgery. Keep up the good fight .this will help you I feel sure.

Been off the boards for a couple of days working very hard. In and out of the office, meetings, oportunities for bad choices and I have to say, knowing I will feel accountable to myself and everyone else out there helped me make decisions that were pro-health. so thanks to all of you for being out there. We can only do good things supporting each othe. My six year "bandaversary" in soming up on 5/28 and I am going to Celebrate. I have NEVER in my life maintained a weight loss of any kind for this long, let alone a 250 pound weight loss.

Jersey girl- congrats on your success moving that scale down.

Old one, how are you feeling?

Everyone else- check in when you get a chance.

Hi folks..well it's been months since I've checked in. I turned 68 in February. I was banded in 06 with a BMI of 40. I would have been happy to lose 50-60 lb., but I lost 100 and have maintained since then without problem. I have never once had a single problem with my band. I hear people say they are "stuck", "sliming", etc. and I have never experienced it.

I love my band. Now back to real life, and I wish you all the best.

Oldone, you are in a good group, here. We have at least 2 heroes to look up to! Sandi and Skittles, you both are my heroes! I haven't had the pleasure of being banded for more than 6 months, yet. But, you 2 have had it for years and have continued to both lose your weight. Hurray for you both! Can't wait to have my bandiversary, and then some. best of luck to us all. Karen

Skittles - this is such a good thing to read. So many have difficulties - and it is great to hear that you did NOT have problems.

I pray I am so fortunate. Will finish mushies and move to real food on Monday. Cross your fingers for me and I'll do my best.

Sandi - way to go - so good we can all be here to keep each other accountable. Very important.

Joyce in KC - with lots of snow today

Oldone made it through the surgery on St. Patty's Day with flying colors. Dr. repaired a small hernia and placed a standard band and I was in and out in eight hours. So far since this has start I've lost 20 lbs and feel oh so much better. Next goal is to get off some of these medications. Everyone is say that will be next so hope so. Any way all is well, I feeling pretty good, definitely have had worse surgeries. Planning to be back to work in a week.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
